Greek Tradition?

Has anyone gotten lavaliered/pinned at W&L? I've heard about it at other schools, but I don't know if there is a rule against girls wearing a frat's letters here.

I don't think there's anything against it, but I've never heard of any girls getting lavaliered.

it apparently happens alot at other schools with a big greek system. i heard it's kind of like a "greek engagement" (but really, it's the step before an actual engagement.)

yeah I know what it is, but it just doesn't happen here.

It used to happen all the time when I was at W&L (over 30 years ago). In those days lavaliered was considered less serious than pinned (probably because the cost of the lavaliere was relatively nominal compaired to the cost of a fraternity pin and the pin would be harder to replace). Both were considered one or two steps below engaged. Probably the equilavant of exchanging class rings or giving your girlfriend your letter jacket in high school, which may also explain why it is not done much today. There was certainly no prohibition on it from the school, but I recall that some fraternities frowned on pinning (because the pin was supposed to show fraternity membership). The lavaliere was intended to be given to your girlfriend (unless you know a lot of guys who like to wear necklaces with their fraternity letters on it)?
