Green Card lottery and Student Visa Applications

Hey! I was wondering if someone could help me with this;

So I am applying for colleges right now and it is also the time to apply for the DV Visa Lottery. I want to apply for the lottery but I have a question

  • IT IS GOING TO BE A PROBLEM FOR ME, when I start to make a student visa in spring, because I heard that consular officers know about the green card applications and they might reject me if they find out that I intent to immigrate.

What should I do?

I participated in the DV lottery before I applied for a student visa. That was back in 2006. I also happened to win the green card lottery. Before I did anything else, I consulted with a lawyer familiar with the American immigration system.

I was advised that the consulate would not know about my participation in the DV lottery per se - they would only know about it AFTER I submit the actual green card application. I waited 6 weeks to submit my green card application until after my F-1 interview. Everything went well. I got my student visa, and a year later I had my green card.

Don’t know if this information is still up to date. If you are worried, don’t participate in the lottery.

Thank you very much! I’m gonna do it ! :slight_smile:

Hey may if I ask what’s DV lottery for?

DV is a Diversity Visa – a lottery for Green Cards available in many countries.

What are the odds of winning it?

It depends on the country, due to regional quotas. On the high end, entrants from Australia and the Pacific Islands have historically had success rates greater than 10%. On the low end, entrants from Bangladesh were drawn at a rate of about 0.03% in 2012 before they became entirely ineligible to participate in 2013.
