I'm a Freshman at Ill. Wesleyan and I recently just got into Grinnell with a lot of aid as a transfer for fall 06.

Problem's that I'm not usre how much better it is than Wesleyan, or is that a stupid problem- I mean I know it's one of the top twenty LACs but Wesleyan's top fifty and I'm just wondering how wise such a move is----

Thots??!!!

so my mum and I had this argument where she kept saying I shudn't transfer- But Grinnell's a better school overall, right? Need your advice!

I think it is more a question of how well you like the two schools. My daughter applied to both. The campuses are different as are the communities. Grinnell is ranked a little higher but I don't know if there would be that much of difference in a degree from one or the other.

Thanks- Maybe I'll stay put then- cos I've already adapted to wesleyan- and I'/m really flexible/adaptable so I frankly think I'll be happy anywhere anyways- But thing is firms I want to work for like mckinsey don't recruit at wesleyan, but recruit at grinnell+ grinnell's really good for grad school as most of their students who do well get into their top grad school of choice-
But as you said, there probably isn't that much of a difference, so I guessI'll stay put=-

Have you visited Grinnell? If not, you should - that might give you a better sense of whether or not you'd be happier at Grinnell. Why did you apply to transfer in the first place? Have things changed, or are you second-guessing yourself?

I would say visit...also I think the academics would be more challenging at Grinnell. More grad school and research opportunities with a Grinnell degree. I think I would transfer, but thats just me

okidoks, so, I'll visit and yes, I'm second guessing myself- Thanks so much for all your advice!

Why did you apply to transfer? Has something changed since then? Grinnell does have the stronger reputation and a statistically brighter student body. It also has a much larger endowment and there are some benefits to students that come with that, such as paid internships and new facilities. However, I would not transfer to Grinnell because McKinsey recruits there (they do?) -- Grinnell's location doesn't really lend itself to having a fabulous career office (neither does Illinois Wesleyan's, as you know). Also, you may want to think about what it means to be a transfer student. I think it would be as easier at Grinnell than at most places - because the students are so friendly - but sometimes it's not so easy.

"Why did you apply to transfer? "
I'm international and Wesleyan does not really go out of its way to support internationals for internships and extracurricular opportunities plus they recently initiated a really annoyingly restrictive policy on study abroad opportunities for internationals-
Yes, McKinsey does recruit at Grinnell...don't know how easy it'll be for me to adapt...hmmm- this is a real toughie-I feel like I'll achieve so much more in college in Grinnell, e.g thru research, study abroad and internships as wesleyan does not have enough resources to support those- I still dunno---It's really hard for me to make a decision-

I agree with most everyone else---visit Grinnell. Grinnell does have a lot of internationals, so they would probably have less restrictive policies. Cost was about the same, but Grinnell offerred D more merit aid. I think you are right that Grinnell would have more opportunities for research, internships, etc. It sounds like you are leaning toward Grinnell so I would go and visit. When my daughter visited she knew she liked it better immediately and noticed the difference in the student body (more diverse) She like IWU but felt everyone was the same and that the students were not nearly as friendly. Good luck

thanks so much- I think the unanimous advice is for me to visit so I probably will- People at wesleyan are nice tho, but if grinnellians are nicer woohoo! here I come! thanks guys!
