I had seen several people post on the HS 2015 Class thread that their kids had been notified online. I went in to tell my D, but she was already asleep. So she checked the next morning (Saturday) and had been accepted.
This waiting is definitely nerve wracking, so the early acceptance from Grinnell was cause for big celebration. Good luck to your D and congrats to those who’ve gotten good news!
@dawnpage, my D went to the portal on Friday night to upload her optional essay and saw an update saying that said she’d already been accepted–a very welcome surprise. She also got an email telling her the portal had been updated, which I think came Friday or Saturday. Good luck to your D!
Thanks that’s what I thought. Hopefully all will go well. I just want her to be happy -she works so hard and is a sweet kid and I’d love to see her get into her favorite schools! Happily she did get in EA to a nice little school that gave her lots of merit aid so that was a boost. Good luck everyone!
My daughter received a offer of admission but only realized when we got it in the mail. Her stats are act 32 sat 2160, gpa 97.4 unweight, AP scholar with distinction, National Honors Society, volunteer work at an animal rescue, class rank 3/239 from NJ. Trustee Scholarship of 15,000
Thanks KAMmom! Her stats are right in line with folks here (3.9 UW GPA, 33ACT, AP Scholar with Distinction, etc.) so I’m hopeful! She’s waiting on several schools (just like everyone else lol) so next month will be interesting!
If you can swing it, I highly encourage visiting. There’s something about the place that doesn’t come across on paper (or website). My son (also an east coaster, and an urban one at that) did not have Grinnell high on his list until he visited. He fell in love with the vibe, the campus, the vibrant campus community, the incredible resources–and ended up applying early decision (and getting in, so he’ll be there in the fall). If we hadn’t managed to make the trip, I really don’t think he would have ever seen what a great fit for him this school is, despite being in the middle of cornfields. And conversely, a visit could more easily make clear to a kid if it is NOT a great fit.
@robotrainbow My DS was also accepted early write. I tried to arrange a visit for at least one parent and child and could not get the cost under $1,000, we are also on the East Coast. I was also trying to add another Midwest LAC he has not visited (or been admitted to) over Spring Break but that just complicated things more.
DS is going to fly out to Iowa alone, the college will arrange transportation from the airport and he will spend the night in a dorm. This is a much more affordable option with the added benefit of DS having to handle traveling alone. He is very excited to visit Grinnell. I think they were very smart to admit kids via an early read and give them a little more time to arrange visits. I think it will improve there yield rate.
@Ctesiphon really? 1.9K posts on this forum and you still think it’s easier to post a question than google it?
An “early write” is like a “likely letter”. Both are letters that are sent to top applicants before official decisions are sent out indicating that an acceptance is forthcoming. I think Amherst and Williams use the term “early write” and apparently so does Grinnell. Tufts does not .
It is indeed easier to post a question, that took me less than 5 seconds. Googling it for such information would require me to open a new tab, access Google, and type in the question–a procession of activities that would likely take longer than 5 seconds.
@Mom24boys I didn’t realize this about Grinnell but actually the article I linked to mentions this. Northeastern started doing this also for it’s top admits. Seems like a trend to beat others to the punch and I’m guessing it works.
Congrats on one of your 4 Boys’ (!) early acceptance.
Last year, there was one round of early writes and the rest of the decisions all came out in March. And for those who may be concerned, many of those March admissions offers did include merit aid, so it wasn’t limited to early writes.
We are actually planning to drive out. It’s crazy, an 17 hour drive, but I plan to drive straight through and try to keep the cost around $400. At this point even that is beyond the budget. My father in law is a professor at Richard Stockton College which he was a founding professor of but before that he was a professor at Grinnell way back in the 70’s. He thinks very highly of it. It was because of his description that she applied. It was -23 the day I called them though.
If I’m accepted, it’d only be a 6 hour drive for me. Grinnell’s one of the closest schools to which I’ve applied. Good luck on your journey! The longest car ride I’ve had to do was to Jacksonville, Florida, about a 14 hour drive from my Midwestern city.
