GS Full Scholarship

Hey all

Does GS ever give away full tuition scholarships?
Could they give one to a poor 4.0/2370 college senior for a second bachelor degree in Biology or for a pre-medical post bac?

Thanks guys

No full-tuition scholarships for post-baccs.

There are full-tuition scholarships for GS undergrads - most are reserved for URMs who, as far as I know, are the first in their families to go to college.

So how much could I expect to get in scholarship and work-study?
Thanks

Depends on your financial need and what year in school you are in ( Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior) since more money is allocated to those that are closer to graduating, since you are a post-bacc, I am not sure, you have to speak with Financing at the GS dept. As you should know, everyone’s finances are different ( Some people have money, some dont, go figure ), so you are not going to get any hard and fast answers from this forum, your going to have to speak with the Financial Aid Counselor at the institution.

URM’s, Hellojan?

Under-represented minorities

I’m a first generation Asian American and the first in my family to pursue a bachelor’s degree. I did not get an offer for full scholarship or ever heard of GS awarding full scholarships. Are Asian Americans not considered URMS? When they speak of URMS, are they referring to blacks and Latinos?

I believe asians are an ORM - Over Represented Minority  (Hispanics, Blacks, Native Americans, etc would be URMs)

I’ve never heard of a full GS scholarship, but if Hellojan’s seen it I suppose it’s possible.

In most colleges, the overwhelming majority is either Asian, or White (european-descent). If you are not one of those, then you are most likely a URM.

Ah, thanks Iggs.

There’s the Program for Academic Leadership & Service (PALS) that awards full scholarships to students of races and ethnicities that are historically under-represented at Columbia. Every PALS guy I’ve ever met turned down a good offer at another top five school to attend GS. PALS covers books, tuition, and your rent.

There are also so-called “named” scholars. So, an alum or generous donor chooses you as their project. They pay for your tuition and books typically for your whole stay making you Smith Scholar - or whatever the name.

You CANNOT apply directly to either. People are screened as possible candidates when they’re first accepted.

Where would someone of south asian descent (ie: indian) fit on the scale of URMness?

Yes, PALS is very generous, but doesn’t cover housing (as I initially thought, unfortunately). It’s basically tuition and fees, which is still great  As previously mentioned, you cannot apply, but you can always call the financial aid office after you receive you FA package and ask for info on more scholarships/grants if you need them. Best of luck! :D

I find being a White/Male in America is hard when you’re on the fence for acceptance to colleges.

I agree. But, as one of my friends says, if life were a video game, straight/white/male would still be the easiest setting.

HAHAHA thats classic. I just think leaving race off of applications would be great.
