What exactly is the process for submitting letters of recommendation? I put down my recommending professors in the application and it sent them the instructions for completing everything, but I had assumed everything would be online.

Yesterday, one of my professors handed me his recommendation in a sealed envelope with school stationary on it and I'm wondering if I'm supposed to submit it to the school with my local college's address in the return address area. Is this the standard way of submitting these? Thanks.

Your professor did not handle the process correctly. He is supposed to check his email inbox for one from Columbia, use the online system (which the email will link him to) for filling out a short questionnaire about you, and then submit his letter of recommendation online in that questionnaire as an attached/uploaded document file.

At least, that’s a hell of a lot easier than the traditional method that he is probably used to. You can still use the physical letter he gave you but you better make sure that Columbia will know that it’s for your specific application. If not, it might be a possibility that your letter could get misfiled. If I remember correctly, some of the supporting paperwork for the online application which I mailed to them were temporarily misfiled.

I submitted one of my letters like this. I put the envelope my professor gave me into a larger envelope. On the larger envelope I put the return address as my own, with my CUID number.

Good advice. That should make things easier for goestowashington.
