Hi, just wondering about the experiences you guys have had with GSI's. Any particularly bad ones?

hahaha
man, i had a gsi for physics 10 that was a riot. dood was 4 feet tall, kinda pudgy, had a shrill nasally high pitched voice, greasy face. He was $.H.!.T. scared of the class and couldn't like...talk with any confidence so he couldn't explain concepts well at all.
On top of that this guy was just weird, he's gay and according to his facebook (my friend and i looked him up on a whim) "likes a strong but loveable cudler" and had pictures of him in a dress with his cat.
it was a funny class

all my GSIs were good till this one class.
well, most international grad students are not that great because they dont speak english very well. its a little difficult if your teacher has trouble speaking the language and tries to explain technical material.
anyway my GSI basically said that girls are stupid and raised some eyebrows.

Whoa...what class was this for and what happened to cause him to say this?

Agree. Those international GSIs know their stuff. It is just that they don't know how to present materials due to the language barrier and poor teaching skills. I know a few of them personally, and they are trying very very hard.

yeah actually being a GSI is like work study. i think they cover your grad school tuition for being a GSI or at least a good chunk of it. some international grad students don't have much of a choice and i understand.
for the GSI who said that girls are stupid, he's a physics GSI. he asked a girl a physics question and her answer was incorrect. then he proceeded to ask a guy and he got it right. then he said girls are stupid.

Subin?

The phuck you talking about, he's alright. I think he explains a lot of concepts quite well.

i had a pretty bad math1a GSI. She often taught material incorrectly and was overall not very helpful. I don't think it was her intention or that she was ill-spirited. She seemed pretty nice. It's just that she was probably not fit to be a GSI. Poor teaching and not good at clarifying concepts (sometimes made it worse for students).

On the other hand, the rest of my GSIs here have been fairly good.

I have a GSI from korea right now, anytime you ask her a question, and it could be about anything, she will say "yes, yeah, uh huh." LOL I don't go to section anymore.
