Guess what 5 college presidents make more than $1 million a year

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – For the first time, compensation for private college presidents has broken through the million-dollar barrier.

In 2004, five presidents earned more than $1 million. And in all, 50 earned over $500,000. ...

The highest paid private college president is Donald E. Ross of Lynn University, a small liberal arts school in Boca Raton, Fla. His compensation package topped $5 million last year, the bulk of it because he was awarded $4.5 million in deferred compensation to be paid out after he retires in June 2006.

Christine Lynn, chair of the University's board, told the Chronicle that the sizeable pay package was because Ross, who has been with the school for 34 years and at one point pulled it out of bankruptcy, hadn't taken a salary in his early years during which time the school also didn't have money to put toward his retirement.

Other million-dollar pay packages went to Audrey K. Doberstein of Wilmington College ($1.37 million); E. Gordon Gee of Vanderbilt University ($1.33 million); John R. Silber of Boston University ($1.25 million); and John M. McCardell Jr. of Middlebury College ($1.21 million).

Don't forget Paula Wallace of Savannah College of Art and Design who earned over 1 million a year in compensation.

Doesn't it seem like an odd group to be the most highly compensated?

As a satisfied Vanderbilt parent, may I say that Gordon Gee deserves every penny and then some. The school has made exceptional progress on his watch, and my guess is he'd be on the short list for the hardest working administrator in higher education. Plus, he makes very amusing speeches and wears neat bow ties. Go, Gee!

Although no longer president of Middlebury, John McCardell totally deserved all the money he earned. He played a paramount role in securing a $50 million anonymous donation to Middlebury in the final year of his presidency. The donation was presented in recognition of his 13 years of service to the college, and the donor's only request was that the new science center be named in McCardell's honor. In addition, he presided over a capital campaign that raised well over $200 million.

Second that on Gee from another Vandy parent. He deserves everything he gets paid.

Glad you Vandy folks like Gee. As a Brown alum I can tell you people couldn't close the door behind him fast enough...One man's meat and all that.

LOL aparent, I was about to post the same thing. Boy, what a bad fit he was.

another Vandy parent here, saying "go Gee". My reaction to the article was the same...he deserves it!

i read the village voice piece on Gee. i don't think brown comes across as a nice place to work. the article is catty.

lol about gee. he was at ohio state for awhile. we liked him. loved those bow ties!
