guessing seems always indicated in SAT

am I missing something ?

1/4 point is subtracted for wrong answer

if there are five answers , assuming no knowledge, one right and four wrong will be produced on average. this will result in 4 quarter point deductions and one point for right answer....therefore no benefit / no harm

if any ability to confidently eliminate one answer (or more) then you should come out ahead.

therefore it seems no one should consider omitting answers as it creates an option that is not necessary and a decision process (whether to omit or not) that takes time . also it creates potential for messing up answer sheet

I am a parent and curious if I am missing something.

thanks

Pretty much.

That's why the "conventional wisdom" suggests the student only leave blank those items where no answer can be eliminated. In reality, as you point out, you will receive a guessing "penalty" if you guess or not, so you might as well.
