Guidance needed on SAT scores/retest!!

I took the SAT June 6th and received a cumulative score of 1880. My scores were CR 620 M 610 Writing 650 w/ an 8 essay! I was not too happy with my score as I at least wanted to break 1950. But, because this test was taken on June 6th I can retake the SAT in October for free. But, I plan on applying EA to Georgetown and they need 3 SAT Subject Test scores. Now here come the questions:

-Should I take the regular SAT or the 3 Subject tests(which ones should I take for an international studies major?) in October?
-If I take the regular SAT in October, can I take the 3 subject tests in November and still apply EA? Would they accept my subject scores late?
-Or should I take the subject tests in October and if I do poorly, retake them in November?

Also, I’m taking the ACT again in September, but I’m not concerned as my score is a 30 and my superscore is a 31. I’m hoping to break the 32 barrier, but we’ll see. Also, if I send my ACT score, it won’t interfere with just sending 3 SAT Subject scores? And if I take the subject tests once and do poorly, I still have to send them. Would that hurt my chances at an acceptance?

Please help, I’m so lost!

Your ACT score of 30 is equivalent to a SAT CR+M score of 1340. Your CR+M scores are equivalent to an ACT score of 27. http://www.act.org/solutions/college-career-readiness/compare-act-sat/ Georgetown does not superscore the ACT. They only consider the CR+M score on the SAT. So, your ACT score is a lot higher than your SAT scores.

I would submit the ACT score and take the subject tests in October. Georgetown does allow you to apply early action without the subject tests. https://uadmissions.georgetown.edu/firstyear/preparation

It would be better if your ACT score was higher though, so you might want to consider trying to raise that one.

Thanks for the fast response!

I’m hopefully going to raise my ACT score to a 32. That’s my goal! But what if I do poorly on the SAT subject tests & I still have to submit them?

Your ACT score is much better than your SAT (a 30 is a 2000, and a 31 is a 2060). Why don’t you not send in your SAT scores, retake the ACT in September if you feel you need to, and take the Subject Tests in October? If you’re going for international studies, I suggest World History and US History. Or, any of the languages if you don’t want two histories. And instead of having all humanities, I would suggest balancing it out with a math or science subject test. Unfortunately, Georgetown’s EA deadline is November 1, so you wouldn’t be able to retake them in November. Just study, study, study!!

I don’t think there should be any interference between sending the ACT and the Subject Test scores, but I could be wrong. And if you’re worried about doing poorly on the Subject Tests, why don’t you just take two? One humanities and one science/math, that should be enough.

Hope I helped!

I would only take 2, but Georgetown recommends 3!
And, I plan on taking Spanish considering I’m entering my fourth year and I might take math. While not my strong suit, I’m entering AP Calc next year so I’ll have some education for math II haha! But, I don’t know what histories to take. I took APUSH my sophomore year and World History my freshman year, so I would literally have to re-study for all of them. That concerns me.

You did help though, thank you.

Hmm, I guess you’ll have no choice but to restudy. I’d say go with World History because (personally) I find it more interesting, and I think the curve is slightly more generous than US History. Also, it has more material so it’s less detailed. But it’s really up to you, and which subject you’re more comfortable with it. If you really don’t care, you might as well go with US because it’s more recent.

Okay! Are there any specific SAT subject tests books that I can buy in order to study? I’ll probably do World History as it really was more interesting and I gained more from it.

You can buy College Board’s big book of SAT Subject Tests, which will cover you for all the other Subject Tests as well. If you want to, you could get Barron’s prep book, which takes the approach of making everything super hard so you’ll do well on the actual test. I personally don’t like this because it provides unnecessary stress, and why prepare for a test that’s harder than it really is? You should prepare for the real thing. I really like Princeton Review, so I recommend that (I used their AP World History book to study for the AP test AND the Subject Test, and I got perfect scores on both!)

Wow, thank you for the help! I’ll definitely order Princeton Review. My friend already has the SAT book, so I’ll borrow that. Congrats on the perfect scores too, very impressive!!

Also, would you recommend taking the Lit subject test? I’m taking AP Lit my senior year, but do you think I’d be prepared enough?

Thank you haha!

Hmm, what would it replace? If it’s replacing Spanish, I’d recommend against it. I’ve heard the Lit test is one of the hardest Subject tests, so why sacrifice something you’ve had 3+ years of experience with for something you’ve had barely any experience in?

If you’re going to replace it for World History, maybeee, but honestly I think you’d be better prepared for World History since it’s easier and you’ve studied it before. One, maybe two months in school isn’t enough to give you leverage in Lit imo. Plus, World History is more relevant to your major.

And definitely don’t take that instead of math, you need a math/science to balance out all the humanities you’re taking.

I was planning on taking World History, but they only offer it in December unfortunately. :frowning: So now what?

Aw whaaat? That sucks :frowning: US History then? And if that doesn’t work out either, I guess you can go with Lit

Yeah, I know. :frowning: I was really bankin’ on World History ahhhh! We’ll have to see how Lit is.

So, I should just take the SAT subject tests in October and just submit my ACT? Or what?
Or, I could apply EA without SAT subject tests & just take 3 in December. This would allow me to apply EA, still receive full consideration, and take the SAT subject tests I want (i.e. World History which is only available in December/June)

bump

anyone else want to give some guidance? it would be greatly appreciated!

Wait, what about US History? Can you take that one instead?

Yes, I could although it would not be my first choice! But if worse came to worse, then I would have to.

Okay… well it’s either taking US History or not sending in any Subject Test scores at all, because Lit is extremely difficult and not as relevant to your major. Or… why don’t you just send in two? Georgetown only recommends three, it’s not required. Plus they said they’d excuse EA applications if they didn’t have any Subject Tests, so isn’t two better than none? You can still take it in December, in case Georgetown doesn’t accept you. Or if they defer you, you’ll have another score to give them

That’s a good idea! If I take two, I would take Math II and Spanish probably, although Spanish does seem very difficult.
