Guide to Housing at USC

Help me pick my dorm!! I have no idea about USC Dorms and there are too may pages to go through. Here is a laundry list of info:

-Freshman
-I’m want a co-ed dorm because I don’t think I could handle living with all girls.
-I want a place where there is A LOT of social life, I need people and interaction, but I don’t want to join a sorority.
-I will be in Roski but I’m not the “artsy” type. I want to study art but I don’t want to live around it 24/7 if that makes sense.

I’m coming from NYC-so I don’t drive, so being closer to campus/USC shuttle service is more convenient for me. I know grad housing is in the North/West side of campus–similar to undergraduate off-campus housing.

Any other reason why you don’t recommend it-besides the prices/other housing alternatives?

Thanks!

WastingLight…you’ve no doubt looked into this housing and have seen this, but in case you haven’t, here is a description. Included is a floor plan.

[Housing Options - Buildings - University Regent](http://housing.usc.edu/HousingOptions/Buildings.aspx?bID=URA)

and on googlemap, the location:

[1219 West 27th st Los Angeles - Google Maps](<a href=“Google Maps”>Google Maps)

It’s a very decent location among a lot of other student housing. Don’t know the building itself, but as far as rent is concerned, it sounds reasonable for a bachelor. My D pays a bit above that for a single room in a 2 bedroom small apartment in the same area though a couple of blocks closer to campus.

WastingLight, first great username. I love the new album. 2nd, if you are interested in university housing apply now. Graduate housing gets assigned very quickly and if you wait too much longer it will be gone.

Just wondering, if I applied for the Birnkrant University Residential College, would my roommate also have to have applied for it? Or would they just have to want to live in Birnkrant?

They would also have to apply for it, and you two need to request each other as roommates.

Anyone have any feed back on the Arts and Humanities at Parkside? My son is interested in the music floor.

Thx.

Look at Fluor. I lived there freshman year, mainly because I couldn’t handle the all-girl/40 girls to a bathroom BS either. Actually, my freshman year roommate in Fluor was a BFA at Roski, too, and she liked it since it was on the side side of campus (but not immediately near) the art buildings.

I found Fluor plenty social – but it just depends who your share the floor with. My suite of gilrs was really down to earth and not catty and we all liked to socialize/party; I never met one girl from the other girl suite all year, and I heard from the guys on our floor they were pretty shy and reserved.

The guys we lived with were really fun. Fluor tends to have a high number of athletes, so one guy suite on my floor was the freshman on the water polo team, the other just regular students. Somehow, we all gelled and doors to suites were always open and it was totally cool for guys and girls to come and go from the common rooms every night, just to talk and hang out or play beer pong.

The people who are your neighbors are a far bigger factor on your freshman living experience than what dorm you’re in. It’s not like they assign certain types of people into certain dorms or anything. Honestly it’s a crapshoot, the only thing you can control is what sort of physical living conditions you want (the aforementioned 40 people per bathroom is definitely something I would avoid if I were doing it again).

Fluor is very nice, but it’s also very popular, don’t count on getting in.

Opinions on housing: Fluor or Birkrant? Pro’s and con’s of each? Input appreciated. thanks

Well apparently if you’re not a Presidential or Trustee scholar, you can’t get into Birnkrant. So that’s a definite con. I will stand by my position that a Birnkrant triple is the best freshman housing arrangement on campus. Birnkrant is near most of the other freshmen dorms, as well as Leavey and EVK, while Fluor is near Cafe 84 and the Lyon Center. Birnkrant is dorm-style, while Fluor is suite-style. They’re both at the top of the heap as far as dorms on campus go, so you can’t go wrong with either one.

Unfortunately unless you’re very lucky you are unlikely to get into either if you apply now. They will have filled up already.

I listed Arts & Humanities as one of my choices after Birnkrant…does anybody have any reviews about this dorm? I wanted a nicer dorm but still to have an active social life…new/north seemed a little TOO party-heavy for me.

Hey there rosyhours… well you could read the second reply (by Sequoia) at

it might give you some sort of insight into the atmosphere at Parkside Arts & Humanities …

And really, nobody seems to be talking about Marks Tower and Marks Hall much … According to Chelseaaa217 on page 15 of this thread :

"Trojan/Marks Tower/Marks Hall/Deans: All sucky. Avoid like the plague. Old rooms, small, not aesthetic, and nobody seems to like it. Marks has a nice lounge but that’s about it. "

Pretty vague, you’ve gotta admit. So why is it that nobody seems to like them ? Because on the outside, they seem to be just perfect for someone who’s not into partying much and prefers something quiet, something traditional and peaceful. I mean, surely everyone isn’t obsessed with the appearance of their dorms, right? Or am I grossly mistaken ?

By the way, I’m a Trustee Scholar (and an international student), so given that I applied two days ago, I’m not particularly hopeful about securing a Birnkrant DBLE or TRPL… :(

sx44038, I live in Parkside and love it! The facilities are fantastic, and it’s a nice and quiet place to live/sleep/study. I still have a social life and have fun with my friends, but it’s definitely nice to have somewhere calm to return to every night. Everyone I’ve known who lives on the music floor loves it–they’re a very tight-knit community.

Wisdomsomehow, thanks for info.

Do you know if the marching band members favor one dorm or another?

any housing for graduate school?

^ I posted briefly about grad school housing in another housing thread; I suggest you dig for it.

USC does offer grad housing – but if you are only considering living near campus, I do suggest that you look for non-USC owned housing as, depending on what you’re looking for, it can end up being much cheaper and a whole lot nicer than what USC offers. There are plenty of apartments, houses and duplexes in the area that rent exclusively to students and they are usually kept in better condition than USC housing. Plus, you wouldn’t have to pay for parking, unlike USC housing which charges you a semester rate to park in their housing parking lots.

I do recommend that international students live in the USC area, as that tends to be the norm and probably easier than living away from campus. But if you’re a US citizen, I would also consider living outside the USC area. Most non-international grad students live away form campus because the areas are nicer, safer and don’t carry the stress/noise of living near undergraduate students.

I’ll be a grad student coming back to USC in the fall, and where I live, it’s a 10-15 minute drive away from campus if I take the freeway. My neighborhood has more residents close to my age and caters to my lifestyle needs (lots of restaurants, bars and music venues.)

so i submitted my housing contract pretty late around the 23rd of april which is pushing it unfortunately. But… i was just wondering about the marks hall/marks tower/trojan hall. i Heard that they were all pretty “lousy” and quiet but just wanted a clear ranking and reasoning behind which is the best and what not.

my ranking for now:

 1. pardee tower
 2. marks tower
 3. birnkrat triple (highly unlikely i will get)
 4. still deciding
 5. fluor tower single (highly unlikely)

I was wondering the same about Marks Tower/Marks Hall/Trojan Hall…

Also, will the environment at New/North and Marks/Trojan change, given that Birnkrant is now the new honors dorm?

wondering about the change as well ^
