I really want to go to college for guitar performance. CONTEMPORARY guitar performance. problem is.. i'm not sure if i could do the Musicians Institute thing. they dont have dorm rooms and i'm not sure how well that would play out. so what colleges offer degrees similar to MI? something thats contemporary... and modern! Something where i dont have to go through all that stuff that i dont want to learn.

Alex, I think you’ll find that most colleges that offer a degree in guitar are going to want you to learn all of that other stuff whether it is classical or contemporary. You might be better off studying with a private teacher. That way you could just concentrate on areas that interest you.

Berklee but that said, I got the impression that the students that come to just do contemporary music are disappointed when they are given quite a bit of jazz. The point is that all of learning takes place from the basis of a subject - music included. At Berklee the basis is Jazz where at another conservatory school it may be classical music. Belmont is another I have heard about with contemporary programs but don’t know much about it.

If you really don’t want to learn the basis why not just go to New York or LA and try it out as a career? I know, awful thing to say…but that is how many guitarists have made it over the years.
Another option: go to school in LA/NY and minor in music but major in a subject you are interested in and gig, gig, gig while in school. I think there are a number of famous musicians that have degrees in other areas. This will still allow for you to “experience” college.
