Gulp... Advise me?

Hello College Confidential! Well, more specifically, hello Vassar people!

I am a first generation American, son of Mexican immigrants. We are a low income family. I am originally from California, where I attended some of the worst public schools in the district. We did plenty of moving around in my high school years; as a result I ended up attending six different high schools. I had a brief stint, well nearly a year, as a high school drop-out. I eventually finished high school.. with a embarrassingly low 2.5 gpa. Entered the work force and wandered from job to job. Eventually smartened up and enrolled at the local CCC, becoming the first in the family to attend college. At this point, I am proud to say that I am slowly turning my life around. My stats would be as follows:

ENG 101
CHM 151 (General Chemistry l)
MAT 220 (CALC l) - Only went up to INTG ALG in HS, taught myself College ALG/TRIG and placed into CALC
FRE 101
BIO 181 (Biology l-For Majors)

4.0

Spring 2012
ENG 102
CHM 152
MAT 230
FRE 102

SAT 2150

EC’s
-Private Pilot’s license
-EMT-B
- 200+ hours of volunteer work (homeless shelter)
-Certified Chrysler technician
-Soccer Team (at CCC) captain on team - There is a chance that I will be All-Region
-Several years work experience (various-manual labor)
-Armature boxer

Well, what does College Board think? I am very hesitant in applying to Vassar. Although there is nothing more that I would love, I honestly doubt I have the slightest of a chance. Should I bother applying? Should I attempt for a Sophomore transfer? Would I even have a shot then? Thanks for reading, and looking forward to any and all advice/comments/input.

I would say go for it. Your CC grades are a 4.0, and a 2150 SAT is above median. ECs/work experience are certainly not bad. You definitely have more than “the slightest of a chance.”

Also take a look at Amherst. I know that they are especially committed to admitting applicants from CCs as transfers. Transferring from a Community College | Transfer Applicants | Amherst College;

You definitely have a chance! The only thing I would be concerned about is your transfer status; Vassar accepts very few transfer students each year, and the expectations for transfer students seem to be much higher than for other students. But with your stats, I definitely think you have a shot.

Best of luck, and I’m glad to see that you’re doing so well, now! You should definitely apply and, if you don’t get in this transfer round, try again. I’ve heard that some students who didn’t get in the first time they applied get in the second, or even third time, so be persistent.
