Guy to girl ratio

Hi so I really like Tulane, I am just worried about the guy to girl ratio of 41.5 (male) to 58.5 (female). I do not want to feel like all of the girls are competing for a few guys. Please respond because it’s the one thing holding me back from loving the school. Would you say the guys are equivalent to the girls attractiveness wise? I really don’t mean to be so superficial but I feel like it’s a factor that may affect my experience.

I don’t go to Tulane but I can tell you that ratio is very common in colleges and from what I’ve heard, dating competition isn’t an issue.

Are you choosing a school for the education you will receive or to find a date?

I’m sorry but having a class full of only girls will not be very diverse. Girls will end up competing against each other and that’s not an environment that I want to be in. My high school had more girls than guys so I think I would know what it’s like, so I know I don’t want to be in a place like that again.

I think it is a fair question re ratio. I’m not sure why you want to know the attractiveness ratio though;)

Yes, obviously the attractiveness issue is highly subjective. I don’t know that any campus is a cornucopia of A&F models.

But there is no doubt that Tulane has trended about 57:43 F:M lately, and while I have never heard any of the young women complain about the classes feeling “full of girls” or having dating issues, I think that is something you will have to try and find out by either visiting campus and talking to many women enrolled there, or contacting some freshmen/sophomores that are already there, maybe within your intended major. That way you can find out both what the classes are like in both academics and composition, and about the social scene in general.

I will also add that I know it is not unusual for some of the undergraduate women to date men in grad school, law school and med school. Perhaps that balances out the ratio somewhat.

Okay thank you. Yeah I’m definitely going to go there and visit to get a feel for the campus and other students. Do you think the gap is going to increase for the next group of incoming freshman?

Not too likely. Seems to have been fairly steady or even maybe a slight increase in guys, IIRC. But essentially the same for a while now.

I’m sorry but this question made me laugh out loud. Thanks for making my day!

I just got off the phone with my D who graduated Class of 2013 and she pretty much echoed what I said. She astutely added that the “feel” you get can be very dependent on your major. Some are still more guy heavy, others very female biased.
