Guys...I don't even know where to start looking for scholarships

I've been trying to get started on this since early February, but I don't even know what to do. I know nothing about the process and I've learned nothing since. I've applied to 10 schools and have been waiting to hear back from them all, but nothing yet.

I've had friends at school start doing applications for scholarships and I've asked them what they've done, and they've all just said that their parents gave them a list of 5-10 scholarships to start on.

I tried asking my parents for a hint on where to start or what kind of scholarships to look for, and they just get ****ed off, and tell me they're not going to do a thing because I always expect them to do EVERYTHING for me (which is a straight-up lie, because I've done the entire six-month college application process by myself without any involvement from my parents).

Any alleged "scholarship search" website like ***************** or even collegeboard gives me a ton of useless scholarships that I have no chance in hell of winning.

My school has a list here: Scholarship Bulletin - Redmond High School but the vast majority of these scholarships don't apply to me (I'm not of Japanese descent, nor am I a black female sorority-bound student, for example).

I really need to do this process, people, but I don't know how. My GPA is only a 3.2 but I had a 31 on the ACT and a 2200 on the SAT. I was hoping to find some scholarships based on scores like this - or, at the very least, a definitive scholarship search where I could input my academic credentials so that it could give me a handful of results that I could use to narrow down my search to like 10-15 scholarships.

I've already filed the FAFSA and I applied for the U.S. Bank scholarship program, but the latter only let me pick one state to choose a university from, but I've applied to ten different schools in different states. I don't know what that's all about.

Can you guys help me?

If you need scholarships to help you pay for FOUR YEARS of college, then private scholarships aren’t likely going to help. They’re mostly small and ONLY for FROSH year. So, you’d be short for the other three years.

Your school/community is usually the best place for local scholarships. The national ones have deadlines that have passed.

If you needed scholarships to make college affordable, then hopefully you applied to some of the COLLEGES that give them. The four year scholarships are usually offered by colleges.

What is your situation? Are your parents expecting you to help pay for school with scholarships?

Most colleges will automatically consider you for merit or need based scholarships they have available. Also, if you do end up at a particular college check their financial aid section of the web site as there may be others you can apply for. Even if you can’t get them freshman year you can apply in subsequent years. My D has gotten a few at her college that way over her three years. If you or your parents belong to a credit union you may want to check there for possible scholarships.

From the information they’ve given me for the FAFSA, I can tell that my situation isn’t shaky at all, and paying for 4 years won’t be a big problem. But my parents still expect me to try my hardest to win as many scholarships as possible. I guess I should still do that out of respect for them and their money. And I do want to at least say I tried.

The other problem is that they barred me from applying to any safeties or even any reasonable matches - basically, the only colleges I’ve applied to are all reaches. I’m sure I’ll get into at least 1 or 2 of the 10 that I applied to, but if by some miracle I do get accepted to them, I know I won’t be in the top percentiles of their applicants, so I don’t know how many 4-year merit scholarships I can get.

And since I’m pretty sure we’re not in any notable state of financial aid, I don’t think the FAFSA is going to help me with anything.

So I think I’m between a rock and…another rock, as far as this whole scholarship situation goes.

In another thread you indicate that you dont’ need FA. So, that’s good. Then you don’t need scholarships, either.

Frankly, with your GPA, winning scholarships is going to be tough since you’d be competing with kids with top grades…especially at this late date.

But are there any places on the Internet to still search around for some minor scholarships? No one wants to pay the full price so if I can at least try for some minor ones - nothing life-changing, but maybe a couple thousand total - I’d at least get my parents a quarter of the way satisfied. There’s tons of scholarships on my school site going til June/July, even, but almost none of them apply to me.

Your GPA will make any scholarship tough at schools that are a reach for you. You imply that your parents cN afford to pay. If so, it’s doubtful any reach school will give you much if anything.

Metal…

Kids have been applying for scholarships since last summer. I highly doubt you’re going to find/win any at this point. Most probably have deadlines that past.

Private scholarships often have a “need” component…you need to tell your parents that.

Your parents need to understand that once they decided that they didn’t want you to apply to safety schools that would give you merit scholarships, then they essentially decided that you weren’t going to get any merit scholarships.

If they didn’t want to pay full price, then they should have allowed some other choices. They can’t have it both ways. Let this thread tell them if they won’t listen to you.

Private scholarships aren’t usually just based on stats…they’re based on ethnicity, a talent, a major, need, a county, a parent’s job, etc.
