My S is trying to decide between GW, where he received no money and Tulane where he received 24K/yr and the honors program. He visited both schools and while he loves DC and GW, I think he liked Tulane even more. His only concern is whether New Orleans will lose its appeal after a year or two. Can anyone convince me that GW would be worth the additional cost?

I guess I’m a fan of going where you feel the best so I’m not sure you will get me to
“convince” you that GW is worth the extra cost unless your son has specific goals that would make GW a more advantageous choice. If he is interested in Political Science or anything remotely along that line, then I would be doing some thinking. I don’t know much about Tulane, although my GC did mention it to me so again, I’m not much help.

I’m not sure how the appeal of New Orleans or any major city could decrease for someone in only two years. That being said, I think he may think the French Quarter is the only thing to do in New Orleans. There are tons of festivals: Jazzfest, Mardi Gras, Freret Market (1st saturday of every month), Po-boy fest, voodoo fest, St. Patty’s day, Irish and Italian Parades, nearby oyster festivals, angola prison rodeo (seriously, look it up), strawberry fest…you get the idea. All of that being said, GW is in DC which is equally unique but for completely different reasons. I can’t see how either school would be worth the cost difference if there’s not a huge difference in preference terms. While Tulane has a very good Poli Sci program, GW would have a clear edge by having more opportunities to intern in DC while in school. Back in my TU days, I did have some friends intern for Congressmen in DC during the summers though. Unless he’s thinking Poli Sci, I think the cost has to be the deciding factor given his lack of preference. Keep in mind too though that many kids change their majors. Best of luck!

GW is all about internships! If your S goes to Tulane, these opps will bring additional costs to tuition (expense of finding accommodations in DC, bc he’ll need to have that expereince) and sporadic (summers and possibly a semester program). If he goes to GW he lives it every day.

*experience, sorry it’s early

I know some kids who go to Tulane and love it!

My D is also choosing between Tulane Honors with 24K and GW with, at this point, no aid. She was accepted to SMPA at GW but the money from Tulane speaks VERY loudly. It’s a very difficult decision on many levels.
