GW vs Indiana Bloomington

I am planning to major in Business. I really don't know which one to choose.

Indiana is ranked higher in the business aspects. But if you look at the school as a whole, GW is far better.

What do you guys think?

Wow, I’m deciding the exact same thing… although I think I have settled on Bloomington only because they are throwing money at me and I plan to get a masters later. Plus it would be in state for me so it’s already cheaper, and GW just isnt giving me enough merit.

Definately consider the costs.

Guys, read my notes from 1 year ago, to the date, about Indiana. I thought I was going to like it until I visited, and, no offense to Indiana, but it was day and night, from the student body to the internship opportunities. thanks.

Multitasker- why didn’t you like INDIANA?

I thought it was day and night with GW. As I wrote my perceptions last year, I though there was not enough diversity, everybody looks the same, too conservative, it is incredibly monumental, you may get lost in the crowd. I spoke to some students about their potential internships, and I was given local opportunities, but very few internsships elsewhere.
The location is far from desirable, 1 hr away by car from the airport, I am from NC and it took me 7 hrs to make it home. The FA office gave me very little money for being OOS, 3500 dollars, when I asked if there was any way to appeal, they told me “it is what it is”
In addition, I was taken on a tour by a senior who was uninterested in being there and every question asked was responded by “I don’t know”. Not to mention the many students roaming in the cafeteria in robes, did not give me a good feeling of being there to learn anything. It would have costed me to go about 36k with all the travelling, and GW gave me a better deal, plus it is driving distance. I feel blessed to be here. Professors care about you as a person, they nurture your education, the ratio is small, the students play hard but study hard too. The intenships are amazing and the location is , well, you know that already. Nobody will walk in pijamas there. GW is more prestigious as well and the student body is totally diverse and mostly liberal, unbelievable student organizations and great career center. Most of all, I am completely happy here!

“too conservative”

If you mean conservative as in politics- Really? I found it to be the exact opposite.
If you mean it as in actions, that seems to be contradicted within the rest of your paragraph when you say everyone walks around in pajamas.
If you mean conservative as in religious, then yah I guess… but I wouldnt count that as a bad thing. I’m Islamic, and I found no real issues with it.

The thing about IU is that you need to be self motivated. There will be no one there guiding you to take hard classes or to get the good internships. There is no one screaming at you to get your grade up or anything like that. You have to have your eye on the ball and get what you want, however no matter what you want it is out there.

With GW, imo, it seems to be a bit more like we will all help you get where we think you want to go and make sure that everyone gets the right chances.

Its sort of like IU is capitalistic (you have the extremes), while GW is more socialist (there is more of a solid middle). I don’t mean that to offend in any possible way, it’s just an analogy.

1.“everyone walks around in pajamas”. Didn’t say everybody, please read the paragraph.
2. Too conservative: yes, that was my perception. Politically, I felt it was more Republican that I could bear.
3. I was asked for my opinion, and I am respectful of anybooby else’s.
I just feel a sense of community at GW that I didn’t at Indiana.

Thanks everybody… I really have no idea where I should go… I mean Gw costs about twice the amount of money that would cost in Indiana… but GW is in DC and it’s alot more interesting city than bloomington… but also when u look at the programs, IUB has better business… so confusing… maybe i should visit GW…

If I visit there, where should I stay? i searcehd a couple hotels, but they were like 300$ per night… any good options?

We always stayed at The River Inn. It’s a few blocks from the campus, very walkable and often rates are around $150. Definitely visit. You will love the facilities at the B-school and the energy of the city.

Thank you researchmavn…

I also would like to see GW takeing more time to put more information on the website… IUB has like the salary for the Bschool grads and job fair and stuff… I wonder if GW has high employment rate…

gogobet-GW has information on their website:

GWStatistics

70% placed by graduation with $47,467 average salary

If you look on Expedia or Hotels.com you can often find rooms for around $100 or $150 for a one-bedroom suite with a kitchen. Search for hotels in Foggy Bottom or near GWU. George Washington University Inn is nice and very convenient and often - but not always - has good deals.

Actually I want to correct what I stated above about career stats at the undergrad b-school. If you go to the hyperlink, the 70% figure is number of undergrad business students accepting a job offer upon graduation (not number placed). Others may have been offered jobs but not accepted them, perhaps because they were going on to grad school, wanted to travel or were waiting for other offers.

It’s really hard for me to decide whether to go to Indiana or gw because of price difference in tuition, and the reputation of the school.

I think reputation of GW is a little better than Indiana but Indiana has a better business school. I don’t know if the companies look at the specific program of the school I graduate… I wanna know… lol

Thanks everyone
