I am considering Richmond amongst others. I spent a month there for Governor's School a couple of summers ago and love the campus. My high school is very large and diverse and yet I think I could fit in at UR just fine. I am a URM.

My daughter also spent the summer of her junior year at the Governor's School on the University of Richmond campus. It is a lovely campus; however, Richmond leaves a lot to be desired. There's not a whole lot going on in the town and it is not the kind of place that would draw a diverse student body as I don't think that diversity is as readily accepted in the Richmond area as it might be in other areas of the country. Marylandgirl, to each his own as far as the campus culture one is looking for -- from my standpoint, however, I personally would prefer a less homogeneous population. Of course this is coming from someone whose daughter graduated from Oberlin College. lol.

re: putting a deposit on GW and pursuing the waitlist at the other university... if I recall correctly from last year, the deposit at GW is huge! And you lose it if you don't go.

I just wrote my check for $800 and put it in the mail for GW. You can't start getting in line for housing until the check is written and I think it is a lottery. At this point D is still desperate for Richmond!

Smart move to send in deposit. $800 Is small vs. $45k x 4 years!
I'm in DC and UR is considered harder to get into than GW (at least from midatlantic area). If DD likes urban, go GW; if not, keep waiting on UR. Living conditions are far superior at UR; more city activities at GW. I went to GW and DD went to UR. Depends what you want. For general liberal arts, I would lean to UR. Also consider living costs, i.e. travel, auto (not at GW!) and general spending expenses. UR is far more "preppy" vs. GW where many have p/t jobs & internships.

I'm a longtime D.C. area resident, but live in TX now. My son is now making his decision btwn several top tier schools/scholarships. Question for you is: Why on God's earth would she not want to go to UVa ? UVa is a better campus, cheaper Out of State than UR and FAR cheaper than GW. My friends daughter goes to GW and he is getting killed with cost of living in the DC area and GW is now over $50k/yr in total cost. Also UVa has far more prestige than either UR or GW.

If you read the whole thread, the Poster's D got into UVM not UVa.

Thanks Researchmaven.. I didn't want to repeat that I was a dope.

Besides that, a lot of people don't like UVa for whatever reason despite the lesser price. We are instate for VA and my kid loved Wm and Mary and didn't like UVa. We had the child apply anyway and ironically the kid got WL at WM and into UVa but still really doesn't like it. So the child will be going the private route if the WM WL doesn't pan out.

Both are REALLY expensive...
