The two schools and locations have a completely different feel. The social atmospheres are much different. OP must have a gut feeling about which one he would enjoy more. Maybe visiting again would help. If OP wants to live in Wisconsin permanently, going to UW is an advantage, even on a personal basis (keeping friendships, etc). If he doesn't, going to a large, private, national school like GW may make sense. If he has a gut feeling, should go with it.

But damn, George Washington University really has a bad reputation, especially among the elitists and prestige wh0res.

I personally think that George Washington U is a pretty damn good school. But it has never gained much respect prestige-wise. Wisconsin isn't really all that much better than GW--despite what the people on CC think. It's not like Wisconsin grads are gonna be a lot more successful than GW grads. Jeez.

With that said, based on money and atmosphere alone, I'd go with Wisconsin. But GW does have plenty of opportunities in the DC area.

teknosoul02, that's the point. Most of us are recommending Wisconsin over GW because it is a much more complete university, from College town atmosphere to campus community and school spirit. As for academics, Wisconsin really is significantly better. Yes, in IR, George Washington has the edge, but in all other fields, including Political Science, Wisconsin is better than GW. In the Sciences and Engineering, it isn't even close. I did date a Kuwaiti student who attended GW once though...and if all GW girls are like her, I would pick it over Harvard! LOL!!!

Isn't that a tad bit hyperbolic? I mean, it's ridiculous that we are blowing this prestige s*it out of proportion. I highly DOUBT that someone would choose a Wisconsin grad over a GW grad based on brand name recognition alone (unless the recruiter was also a Wisconsin alum, which is understandable in that case).

This is really getting ridiculous, these p!ssing matches about how one university is so much better than another academically. I think both universities are FAIRLY comparable academic, though I admit Wisconsin prolly carries a bit more brand name recognition. And I also admit that Wisconsin is better as a complete university. And for the record, I would also choose Wisconsin too.

I'm sick of how ppl should just choose universities based on prestige and reputation alone and hope that that you can let the whole prestige s*it give you all the jobs and women you want.

teknosoul02, I don't care about job placement. I was referring to the quality of the faculty and curriculum. In terms of job placement, I am pretty sure GW is great. But to me, education is about learning. Job placement is a separate issue altogether. I know that as an Econ major, I would never have considered GW. They just don't have the faculty and course sellection to meet my needs. I would have considered Wisconsin seriously given their faculty and course selection.

well for the social atmosphere, I think DC is an amazing place I'm a freshman at Georgetown (which is a twenty minute walk from gwu) and I absolutely love it here have you considered georgetown for business though?

Must a school have grass to be said to have a campus? I think not. I attended an ivy league school and worked in the consulting field for years. My D chose to attend GW, not because she was forced to, but because she and we were very impressed with what they had to offer, given what she was looking for. Some people prefer a city atmosphere to a more isolated environment. There are opportunities in many fields for internships, not just during the summer, but also during the school term. There are opportunities to partake in the diverse cultural offerings of the city, such as theatre, ethnic neighborhoods and restaurants, museums such as the Smithsonian, diverse architecture. GW is not necessarily more expensive than other schools. You don't know how expensive it will be for you until you apply and see whether you have received merit or financial aid. People on this board seem to love bashing GW, because they look at flawed rankings that don't give proper weight to the strengths of an up-and-coming city school like GW.
If you're interested in making important job contacts and staying on the East
Coast, I'd seriously consider the opportunities offered by GW.
