The first year students have (unlike most returning students) been on campus for 2 weeks. I wonder whether there have been any reported cases of H1N1. D says her house has lots of hacking, coughing, "sick-looking" kids. Has anyone heard anything?

Cases of H1N1 will be reported here:

As far as sickness goes, I think that the stress of starting off a new school year, plus living in a public space like a dorm, plus the rapid changes in weather can account for it.

Unalove, as usual good points. I hope UChicago escapes the brunt of the H1N1 illnesses.

Information received from Dean of Students:

Dear College parents,

With the academic year now in session, I write to address a topic that has received much attention in the media over the past several months.

Throughout the summer, the campus has been planning for the flu season, in particular the pandemic H1N1 (swine) flu. The good news so far is that H1N1 flu, though easily spread, continues to look no more severe than seasonal flu. Our campus planning is based on directives from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as guidance from public health officials and experts at the University’s Medical Center.

We have communicated with the university community, including your student, in detail about our preparations, and we have provided suggestions from the Centers for Disease Control on ways to protect against getting the flu. This information, including information about our on-campus vaccination clinics, is available on the University’s flu web page, [Behind the News: H1N1 Flu | The University of Chicago](http://news.uchicago.edu/btn/swineflu.php).
You may also access this information through the College’s parent website at [Parents & Family | The University of Chicago](http://parents.uchicago.edu/). I invite you to refer to these web pages regularly.

If you have questions related to the University’s preparations for the H1N1 flu, please email swinefluinfo@lists.uchicago.edu.

I hope your student is enjoying fall quarter and look forward to
seeing many of you at Family Weekend in a few weeks.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Goff-Crews
Vice President for Campus Life and Dean of Students in the
University

I dislike how everyone is overreacting. Every classroom in my school now has a MASSIVE think of hand sanitizer. It’s ridiculous…and almost laughable. Just my opinion on the matter. As for if the students have it…Well I dunno. If they do…not biggie. Just have to be a little more careful and all that…but no need for widespread panic (Great band btw :p)
