<p>I was accepted to both with pretty much the same aid package. Any ideas on which is better?</p>

<p>We looked at both, and decidely prefered Hamilton. The kids were nicer, and noticeably less pretentious. They have a reputation for being nice too. We also thought the Hamilton campus was more appealing than Colby’s. While Colby is impressive as you drive up, it actually felt like a facade once we actually toured. The dorms we visited felt like fire traps, the dining hall was dark and foreboding and the academic buildings did nothing for us. In contrast, Hamilton’s facilities were appealing on all fronts. It felt like a place we wanted to be. Most importantly, while both schools suffer from the small LAC anonymous sense that pervades outside of academic circles, our research (by checking with friends and colleagues in law school and grad school academia as well as high school guidance ) led us to conclude that Hamilton had a better reputation. Last, while our high school is only one data point, the kids accepted at Hamilton are brighter without a doubt than the kids who were accepted at Colby. I know this post will offend those of you who like and are going to Colby and you obviously will share your views below. Keep in mind the OP asked for this sort of opinion.</p>

and hamilton’s students are all-around great kids…super friendly and all different</p>
<p>We had a totally different view when visiting both. The Hamilton campus seemed dreary to me. The town of Clinton is cute but Utica, the only city of any size that’s close, is about as bad as it gets. IMO Colby not only had a much more beautiful campus but also friendlier students. Waterville isn’t great but not that bad either, and seems to be improving. Colby seems to appeal to more “outdoor” types who enjoy the beauty of Maine all around them, while Hamilton seems to have more students from the New York area. My impression is that more future Wall Street types are drawn to Hamilton while Colby is strong in internationalism. The “win rates” maintained by colleges showed, at least a few years ago, that students accepted at both chose Colby overwhelmingly. That said, both are great schools with many similarities.</p>

I had to laugh at what you said. for those of us in New England, Maine is the playground and Waterville is where we stop on our way to way far away in Bar Harbor. I love Hamilton but it seemed way far away to me…practically in Buffalo (HAHA)</p>
