I did my workout in a costume – a Texas Ranger! – and we’ll be handing out candy with the neighbors, who will come over. Dh as a former elementary teacher in our neighborhood school is an attraction himself. Former students love to come say hi!
I never dress up, but I do hand out full size candy bars. Our house has several steps and I am concerned about the kids tripping on them so I will probably sit outside (at least for awhile). It is cold here though!
No costumes for us, but we are having some old friends over (a friend who just stepped down as the president of a university). We have a caprese salad with bocconci carved to look like skulls, mahi mahi, hawaiian pumpkins, and creme brulee cooked in pumpkin shells. ShawD had a dinner with the skull bocconci (credit to her imaginatin), a hand mapped of chevre wrapped in prosciutto, and three other Halloween themed dishes. Ours is more autumnal.
We used to live in an in-town neighborhood of a very safe suburb. Kids would be bused in from other towns and Boston to our neighborhood and we’d have hundreds of kids come by. We set up an 8’ knight in the enclosed porch and put in a walky-talky so we could interview them on their way to the door. It was very funny. Now we are the only house at the far end of a half-mile street with most houses having at least an acre of property. And, you can’t see our house from the street (long driveway. So it is very inefficient for kids to come our way. Last year, we got one group of teens. But, we are happy. I feel like we gave more than our share in the old house.
Sounds like many of us will have pretty cold temps for Halloween. - you never know what you get! Friday it was nearly 80, today high of 35 and currently flurries!
My guess is that in the coldness the first hour will be busy and then largely crickets.
Our official trick or treat start time started 15 minutes ago. We usually have a mad rush of preschoolers right at the start and so far zero. I hope this indicative of how tonight is going to go otherwise I will have a ton of candy to give away.
Ok, I’ll confess. I haven’t handed out candy in 5 years. I just close the drapes and turn off the lights.
We finally had three groups but usually by now I’ve had over a hundred kids. None of the families with young kids are out.
Walk away from the chocolate ChoatieMom, walk away from the chocolate…
Actually the pumpkins may be Japanese pumpkins. And I forgot the polenta with some kind of Halloween decoration.
Ours start well below I get home from work at 5:15. H and I sat out there. I bring Alexa out to play Halloween music. We are already done with 20 pounds of candy. Crowds were almost as big as they were when the kids were younger.
H is AMAZING with the kids. It’s almost like he does this for a living or something! (32 years of elem PE teaching will do that) lots of his kids and former kids come by. It’s great. I never want to go out there but then am so glad I did. Lots of happy families and kids.
We’ve had maybe a quarter of our usual traffic by this time. Mostly big kids. I think it’s probably too cold for the little ones.
Last it it was warm and nice to just hang out outside but this year I’m inside with the heat on.
We’ve had two groups of kids come by in the past 10 minutes. That’s it so far. Someone PLEASE come take our candy!
Love all the pet costumes, but I think our girl would chew a costume to pieces in no time flat.
I passed out at our now vacant house for over an hour and then turned off the lights. So cold and snowing! Had to bring the treat baskets in the house because everything was getting wet! Definitely less kids than usual. And to be honest some looked miserable!
You never know what you get weather wise!
Wow snow! We were in the upper 40s with some wind. That doesn’t sound bad, but the last 3 days were in the mid 80s, so it’s been a shock today. At least the misty rainy blew out.
Last week our heat was on - it’s set at to come on when the house drops below 65. This weekend our AC was on. It’s set to come on when the house is 79. This afternoon the heat came back on!
It was a very light turnout this year. Maybe 75 kids total. I was giving huge handfuls of candy at the end. Still will send most of what’s left to H’s office tomorrow.
Grand total of six trick-or-treaters (three pairs) by sunset here at 6:15, and the weather is perfectly fine. I’m now hiding in the study with the lights off. If anyone else comes, it’s most likely to be older kids - middle school and above - and I’m not comfortable answering the door at night while alone anymore. I’ve read too much on Next Door about how these local kids can behave.
I’m so disappointed. At our old house we never had any kids come. Our street had no sidewalks and it was a rather steep and long climb to our house (and to most of the other houses on that street.) Halloween was one thing I looked forward to here.
So far we’ve had four small groups with 10 kids total. Other than the first family with little ones, the rest of the kids have looked to be 12 - 15 years old. They were delighted when H told them to each take two of the full size candy bars. It’s been 45 minutes since the last group. I’m sorry we didn’t give them all half a dozen candy bars. We don’t need the leftovers.
It seemed as if many more churches and other organizations hosted trunk or treat last weekend, so that could account for the lack of kids as much as the chilly weather.
Thank me later (but mail me a few)…
I’m going to make these! Thanks for the recipe!
