I didn’t even think about it until my sister wished me a happy day today. So, hope all the fellow lefthanders out there have a good day today!
Me! (Even though emoticons are biased and don’t have a left choice…)
We have several lefties in my immediate family. I believe my grandmother might have been a leftie, but was forced to switch, so she tried to do the same to my brother and I. She was not successful and ended up with 5 left-handed grandchildren!
My brother is 69 and writes with his hand at the top of his writing, with his wrist bent; I think this is the typical leftie style. I write with my paper at an angle to avoid the hooked wrist. How do you write?
No hooked wrist for me.
Me neither. No hooked wrist. When I was in grade school, a teacher tried to get me to use my right hand. My father had to have a word with her!
My parents and sister were all right handed, so I was the lone left handed one. My older son is left handed , so I was not unhappy to finally have someone else left-handed in the family!
In Kndergarten, even my teacher was unsure whether I was a Leftie or a Rightie. (Yea, mostly I’m just uncoordinated). So Mom said if unsure encourage Rightie, since easier. My handwriting was always awful. For most subjects I was an “A” student, but if I got a “C” in handwriting we went out for ice cream. Over time I realized that things I taught myself like dealing cards tended to with left had.
Our son is a Leftie. He tends toward ambidextrous, like his paternal grandfather who actually performed surgery switching hands sometimes. In tennis lessons at age 6, son just did not understand why they were teaching backhand - he preferred to switch racket to other hand as needed.
I’m the only righty in our immediate family- I tried to get them to name one of our pets Lefty:)
My mom, son, and FIL were/are lefties. They tried to get my mom to change. I’m glad they didn’t succeed because she had the most beautiful handwriting I’ve ever seen. One of the things I miss most is getting handwritten notes from her.
Lefty here, along with ds2!
DH and DD are on board with celebrating this one!
My 2 siblings and I are lefthanded. Dad was but he was born in the era where it was considered evil.
I am similar to your son - I also play tennis with two forehands. I eat and write lefty, and play most but not all sports righty and can switch pretty easily between right and left for everything. I think I just don’t have a strong dominant side. It always caused a delay when starting a new activity as I tried to figure out what hand to use.
I also eat and write left handed, yet some sports I play right handed. I did play tennis left handed for some reason.
My hand writing was also graded as a C throughout elementary school. Maybe I really should have been right handed.
My husband and I are both lefties. He claims to be a righty who happens to write with his left hand. lol.
I’m a real lefty. Write and do most things left handed except cutting. I learned with my right hand. I can also use a mouse either left or right. I bowl with both hands.
Our kids are sadly righty’s. We do have some lefty kitchen utensils and enjoy watching anyone who visits try to use them
I eat and write with my left hand, but do most everything else with my right. I’ve recently started playing pickleball, and since I have a somewhat bad right shoulder, I sometimes play left handed. I’ve played entire games left handed, but I’m definitely better with my right. I think I could switch to left handed much easier than people who are right handed for everything.
I do everything left handed. Even when kickballs came my way as a kid, I kicked with my left foot. The only thing I did with my right hand was play guitar, and you need some dexterity in both hands for that. I still remember a group tennis lesson as a teenager with friends as the only left handed one. The teacher was not helpful. Same with a golf class in college, back in the day when you had to take a phys Ed type class at many colleges. Just do the opposite of what we’re doing! Yeah, very helpful!!
Don’t even get me started on things like scissors and can openers. Right handed people have no idea what we have endured!
I once took a three day golf course. I’m left handed and tall. They gave me righty clubs and they were women’s regular sized, that is too short for me. It wasn’t until I watched the video that I realized what a catastrophe it was. I was swinging wildly and bent over.
I also haven’t ever forgiven one of the colleges I attended. No lefty desks and only lefty seats at the end of the row. Not enough for all lefties. Though we all laughed about it. Better get there early for exams though, no joke.
Righty’s think it’s fine for lefties to adjust. That’s why we like our lefties kitchen stuff. Switch it up for a change.
@snowball I was curious about the hooked wrist reference so I googled it. Not sure it’s necessarily a given with left handed people. I write regularly, so does my one son who is left handed. The only thing I saw online was that about 30% of left handed people write with hooked wrist (as opposed to about 3% of right handed people) I’m sure there is more info out there that could have more accurate percentages but this was the one I first found.
To respond further to your question, I don’t really do anything special with writing , like angling a paper, etc.
My D is a lefty. I remember noticing it when she was a baby in her highchair - she would go for food or a crayon with her left hand. I would hand her things in her right hand just to see what she’d do and she would automatically switch to her left hand. She’s a righty in all of her sports though - golf, gymnastics, dance. She also plays the violin and ukulele as a righty.
