Hard decision to make!

Hi everyone,
I am international student and very excited for my undergraduate studies. I narrowed my choice to 2 universities - UC Berkeley and Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University. (major: Psychology) Which one do you think is better considering faculty and future career?
Thank you in advance :)

Lol UC Berkley and Penn State are not on the same playing field at all. Go with Berkley…far superior school.

Well, I know Berkeley is a wonderful school, but There are some great reviews about Schreyer Honors College too… I am really at a crossroads :)

What are the costs of each school for you? What can you afford? What type of area would you prefer to live in?

If both schools are similar cost wise, I would definitely choose Berkeley. The academic reputation there is superior to Penn State probably even with the honors bonus. Job prospects are good for both schools but i highly doubt the honors college at PSU would give you an advantage over a Cal grad who performed well academically.

At Berkeley you will be living fairly close to San Francisco, as opposed to living in rural PA at PSU. Weather differences should be taken into account especially if you are coming from a fairly warm country, the winters in state college will be a big change.

If the price is the same, I’d go with Berkeley. Stellar psychology program and such a fun place to be. (A much wider variety of kinds of fun than PSU, IMHO.)

If you can afford both Berkeley would be the best choice - it is the superior school.

If cost/transportation/etc. isn’t a problem, pick Berkeley. It’s a UC, it’s one of the best schools, and…like everyone else said, it’s superior!

One of the best schools in california or an averagestate school in rural PA.

The only reason you shouldn’t go to berkeley is cost, but if you can afford it…

I would also go to Berkeley if you’re considering faculty and future career. That said, I do not agree that penn state is an ‘average state school’. It isn’t quite a top state school, but it’s close. PSU is an excellent university. If you believe that you would enjoy PSU significantly more, then I would go there.

For an international student, I would lean towards Berkeley. It has a much stronger international reputation. It probably has a much larger population of international students, and more students from other US states, and a generally more diverse population. Penn State is probably mostly students from PA, with some students from neighboring states - NJ, NY, etc. I’m in NJ, and the kids I know who go to Penn State tend to be ones who want to go to a school with a big sports culture, where football game day is very important. You don’t describe what type of campus culture you are looking for, so I don’t know if that culture is a good or bad thing for you.

You will pay out-of-state tuition either place presumably. What country are you coming from?
