I need on the following questions on SAT ISE

1) The bus would not have had (to take) the long detour (instead of) the main highway if the bridge (did not become) treacherous (in the aftermath of) the icestorm
Error: C

2) It was obvious that all candidates had planned (carefully) for the television debate; (for each) (answer to) the opening question showed evidence (of having been) rehearsed.
Error: E
I thought it should be D (had+verb) for consistent past tense

3) The seven-month old baby was considered precocious (to her family) because she was (already able) to grasp tiny items (delicately) (between her thumb) and forefingers
Error; A

4) (For) any mayor of a vast metropolitan area, an (understanding of) current issues in all districts (is) not only (desirous) but also vital
Error: D
Could you justify why D is the error>

The answer is C for the first question because the sentence is conditional, indicated by the words “would…if”
Therefore, it cannot be “did not become” because that is in the past tense, something that already happened. It does not indicate something could happen, but did happen. Therefore, you got the wrong tense used.

You can say “The bus would not have had to take the long detour instead of the main highway if the bridge HAD NOT BECOME treacherous in the aftermath of the icestorm”

For 4) the right word is “desirable”=“would be beneficial to have in the future”. To get an error identification question right, you only have to know that “desirous” is the wrong word in this sentence. You don’t have to know that “desired” is also wrong.
