Hardest Majors in CAS?

What are the "hardest" majors in CAS? I know things like this can be subjective and will be varied throughout the responses. Give the top three or five hardest majors in your opinion and a brief reason. Ex. History is extremely difficult due to the amount of writing. Thanks and GO!

I’ve heard Psychology is a killer :P

it just depends on what courses and professors you take…

History is most certainly not most difficult haha

the sciences are the hardest…i know that.

hahaha psychology hahaha

I just used history as an example lol So by sciences does that encompass biology, chemistry, and physics? Which one is the hardest? Ohhh! I have another question. Are certain concentrations in the bio major easier than others?

I take it psychology is not a hard major?

physics is pretty hard… although that goes without saying.

This is why I am not a math major:
http://www.math.cornell.edu/~putnam/freshman_prize/freshman_prize_09.pdf</a></p>

People doing pre-med (though not a major) have a tough workload. They are usually under a lot of academic pressure because they have to maintain good GPAs to get into medical school.

Any of the hard or life sciences, as well as computer science, will be difficult at any school.

I also have a lot of respect for majors in the humanities, in particular creative/thoughtful ones like philosophy, English, music, visual/performing arts, etc. Those are hard in their own way.

Physics - definitely heaviest workload, endless problem sets, long hours in lab, conceptual difficulty in learning topics

Chemistry - similar to physics workload

Music - intense workload for the serious students, lots of sheet-music analysis, lots of hours in studio, etc.

What about social sciences like Gov and Econ?

I’m sort of considering double-majoring in psych and English (don’t really have a career path in mind, these are just some of my interests right now)…given what’s been said about psych here, I’m guessing that wouldn’t be too difficult? lol

^the requirement for the psych major is 40 cred of psych. considering that means you could have like 80+ other elective credits, it’s not that bad. haha

Wow, really? I thought that the psych requirements looked pretty lax, but I didn’t know they left that much room for other electives lol. Do a lot of psych people double-major as a result? I’m more interested in social psychology than in the more scientific subdivisions.

Econ is a joke.

While I wouldn’t argue the conceptual difficulty portion, I highly doubt that physics/chemistry have heavier workloads than Computer Science.

Ever spent two straight days (That’s 48 hours of non-stop work) debugging a project (not even writing the program, just debugging), and not finishing? And that’s just spent on 20% of the project (Don’t get me started on the other 80%)? The vast majority of Physics majors I know (on the honors track) just have a study party right before a problem set is due.

How many coding assignments do CS majors typically get every semester?

Depends on how many CS classes you take.

And depends on the CS class. Some CS classes are heavy on theory (and thus heavy on problem sets), other are more application-based so have a lot of projects.

Personally, last semester I spent about 15-20 hours a week coding, and I only took 2 CS classes.

I was also told that Biology at Cornell was really difficult. Is it harshly curved? I could not fathom all that work on Computer Science. Yikes! So are there any hard Humanities?

@countryangel - yeah, there is definitely lots of room for double majoring. im doing bio and psych double, which is possible without going over 120 credits. so psych is nice to do as a double haha.

@helvetica - yeah the curve in bio (at least intro bio) is kind of harsh. but the workload isnt that bad and the material isnt that complicated though.

So psych is a good adjunct major. What are some other majors that ppl double with bio? Do many ppl double major with a science & and non science??

Cool, thanks tmk39!
