i was wondering if hartt school of music would be considered a very selective music school. since i have a lot of auditions to attend i won't be able to fly across the country for all of them so i was wondering if submitting a dvd or maybe going to the regional auditions would be a good idea.

I've been studying at the Hartt Community Division for quite some time and I have gained alot of respect for the school. I would definately consider it a good program but it is in no respect at the level of conservatories. It isn't exactly safety material either. Anyways, I love Hartt so I suggest applying!

(then again, this is coming from a flutist perspective, strings may be totally different)

answering your question, it is recommended that you audition in person at most universities. I know regional auditions and tapes are offered but my instructor (also a flute professor at the Hartt School) explained that the least number of applicants are chosen from those types of auditions. Since the professors have to pick which students they like best, they want to hear them in person. Of course, if you live in California or some other state very very very far away I'm sure it wouldn't matter? Hope that helps a little, good luck with apps and auditions!
