There are currently 1696 members in the Harvard class of 2020 facebook page. Where would that leave us waitlist candidates?
^^ Interesting, as Harvard only has 1660 beds for their incoming freshman class. My guess is that some students who joined the 2020 Facebook page (possibly from SCEA acceptances) have decided to matriculate somewhere else. That said, with that many students, I doubt there is room for much more!
@Middleschoolmoom lots of kids will join the facebook groups of schools they are admitted to without committing. for example im a member of three facebook groups despite the fact that (obviously) i have only committed to one school. we know that harvard was looking to admit 40-50 kids from the waitlist, and that doesnt include waitlisters who will be placed on the z-list. additionally, there are students who have committed to harvard who will be taken off of the waitlist at other schools, and may possibly opt to commit there and leave harvard (though because harvard is harvard im sure many will opt to stay). while gibby is right that there are not many spaces left, there are not 1696 kids who have 100% for sure committed to harvard and will 100% for sure attend in the fall.
@Middleschoolmom, the official Princeton class of 2020 FB page has some administrators and current students on it. Perhaps the Harvard one does as well, which would account for the numbers you mentioned.
I’ll also note that they may be kids who have been admitted (like my D) who have not joined the FB page as well.
The facebook page states :*It is easier/faster for the admins to approve your request if your Facebook name matches the name you used on your application. If you use a different name on Facebook, AND/OR if you are currently on a gap year, please email harvarduac@gmail.com and verify your identity.

I do see a few with other college listed under their names interesting perhaps these are students who were waitlist elsewhere and got in. four Stanford, three Yale, one u of Melbourne, one Columbia, one Vanderbilt, one Middlebury
@Middleschoolmom: Harvard’s yield is about 80%, and has been pretty consistent for the past 50 years. So Admissions purposefully admits more students than they have room for in their freshman class and assume a 20% melt. For example, between the SCEA and RD rounds, Harvard admitted 2,037 students for the class of 2020. Assuming an 80% yield, that gives Admissions about 1630 matriculated students. Add in about 30-40 waitlist applicants and that brings the total to 1660 beds (Harvard stated freshman class size) . . . or a potential of about 2,075 on their Facebook page. Many students ask to join the Facebook page on April 1st, but decide for whatever reason to go elsewhere by May 1st. So, I don’t see what the issue is.
My daughter just got a call. She’s been accepted to Harvard! … Good luck to those still left on the waitlist! There is still hope!
People who were accepted off the waitlist - do you get a portal update the same day as your call, or a few days later?
The portal should be updated the day after the call, I believe.
When do people hear back if they have been removed from the waitlist? (So rejected) will you get an email or a call or do you just have to refresh your portal?
Proud to say Go Crimson. My son got called from the waitlist yesterday afternoon, he never gave up on his dream. Just waiting on a portal update now. Best of luck to those still waiting who have not lost hope.
@basketlax44 i’m not 100% sure but i believe that your portal will get updated, which might be accompanied by an email.
Congratulations to all of you that got in!!! Soooo great!!! Which schools did you (or your kids) commit to that you will now be backing out of?
To those who have gotten in - when / how do you access your financial aid decision, given the short time frame? Also, when is the portal supposed to update? (I got a call yesterday afternoon, but my portal still remains unchanged.)
My D heard on Wednesday, and got a financial aid letter on Saturday (electronic, via the portal).
if you miss the call that you were accepted, will they leave a message? has anybody had this happen to them? if they don’t leave messages, do they call again or just send an email?
also- if you have been rejected from the waitlist, will your portal update to reflect this? will that necessarily be accompanied by an email?
my portal still says i am on the waitlist, so does that mean they’re planning to send another round of acceptances/rejections possibly next week?
^^ See post #195
My daughter missed the call, and they left a message. When she called back, she had to leave a message. Finally, after 3 hours, they connected. She then went to her portal and got the written confirmation, two days later, that she had been accepted. Good luck to you.
