Harvard and Yale: Choosing

I received a full ride at both Harvard and Yale. However, my Yale student contribution is $535 more than my Harvard student contribution. This is because my parents had saved $5000 in a UGMA for me, and Yale takes 25% whereas Harvard only takes 5%.

Since we're talking about student contribution and not parental contribution, do you think Yale would match Harvard's offer. I know that they're known to do that, but is that only in the case of grant money? I know its small a difference of $500, but I'm trying to equalize the finances as much as possible so that I can make my decision purely on what each offers academically and socially. Any help?

Sorry if this sounds in the least bit penny-pinching. ^_^

Congrats on getting admitted into two of the top schools in the nation! I would go ahead and ask Yale to match Harvard’s offer.

Just ask Y for a FA review and tell them about Hs offer. They’ll either match or not, and you will know for certain, as opposed to any opinions you might get here.

@soydecali I wish you the best of luck! I really hope they match your other offer - how often does Yale match H’s offers? Does anyone know?

$535 out of $60K - $70k awards? And you asking Yale to match Harvard’s award? Are you kidding?

^^I also found it amusing, but nothing ventured, nothing gained so the OP should simply ask. $535 is probably 2-3 weeks pay for a summer job after taxes :-)

um… is this for real? I doubt it.

I’d pass on both if they’re going to “take” YOUR money!!! Not fair.

Neither is worth that kind of personal sacrifice.

Closing old thread.
