Harvard Med?

So, my daughter just got into Harvey Mudd, and being the proud parent that I am I am telling people that she was admitted to "Harvey Mudd."

At which point a significant minority (aliebit the uneducated one's) say "Wow, Harvard Med??" I would have been less surprised by "where?? never heard of it." This is a really amazing response given that she is still in high school. Is this common?

Haha. Yup.

In fact, "Because I thought that I was going to Harvard Med" is on the tshirt for "Top 10 reasons to come to Mudd".

Happens all the time. Simple remedy: Kick them in the face and they'll remember where you go next time. :)

I'm only joking... or am I?

Haha yep that happens all the time. Gets a little annoying, but whatever...ignorance is everywhere. You just learn to shrug it off.

It has happened to me too. Either that or people are like "what???" Then other people think I go to "Claremont" from my Facebook. "How's Claremont University?"...

Since I got in, the two most popular things people have asked me are:

Isn't that the gay high school in New York? - confused with Harvey Milk High School, a school for LGBT students in the East Village of New York City
Isn't that the weird all-boys college in the California desert? - confused with Deep Springs College, but why?

I think these responses are a real hoot! It's funny that people grasp at straws instead of just admitting ignorance. Usually, if I havn't heard of a school someone says they go to, went to, or are planning on going to I say "I'm not familiar with that one, can you tell me about it?" This is a good all purpose response to ignorance, IMHO. I make no pretenses to knowing about all schools out there.

I've actually been pleased with how many people do know about HMC. One person said: "My best friend's kid went there. After he graduated he and a fellow grad founded a computer company, sold it after a few years, and retired at the age of 35." Very nice.
