Harvard or Yale?

“Do Harvard students/admits post similar things on the Yale board? I’d hope not… but I don’t know.”

No, they don’t.

As someone who attended Yale as a premed majoring in biology, I second the post about Science Hill being somewhat of a drag at Yale. It’s a long walk in the ice and snow to trek up the Hill in the winter for science classes. I believe the humanities are strong at Yale but engineering and the sciences are less strong. Premed advising at Yale is excellent. Of course, I can’t speak about Harvard since I didn’t attend. At Yale, you take 9 courses a year instead of 8 classes per year at Harvard. Unfortunately, taking a fifth class during the semester at Yale is often a killer as far as workload is concerned for premeds. I also preferred Cambridge to New Haven. My own daughter is choosing Harvard over Yale. I’ll report back after she’s been there a while.

i personally have this decision, and i’ve personally already picked yale–but i second the opinion that the best thing to do is go to the admitted students’ weekends, talk to people, walk around campus and just see which gives you a better vibe. trust your gut, and DON’T base your decision on name, whatever you do, you’ll only regret it later. good luck!

laststopforme - Your point #3 doesn’t make sense. At Yale you’re “stuck in a college,” meaning that your only option is to leave it if you don’t like it? As opposed to what, remaking Calhoun in your image?

I’d just like to point out that, from an outsider’s point of view of a ton of H v Y discussions on these boards, Harvardians and Yalies seem quite equally bitter/derisive towards each other. kthnxbi.

Being “defensive” isn’t necessarily an inferiority complex as some people call it. Maybe those schools just have a stronger school spirit.

i too am deciding b/t h and y how is harvards premed and science in general versus Yale do many harvard undrgrds get accepted to harv med school?

Both there PreMed Programs are equally as fantastic. I know plenty of people who have gotten into their top choice for med school from both. You are choosing between the best two colleges in the WORLD. The numbers should not matter. For an undergrad experience though, I would recommend Yale. Maybe do Yale for undergrad and maybe harvard for med school.

“Maybe do Yale for undergrad and maybe harvard for med school.”

165 students are accepted to HMS. Harvard is the best represented undergraduate institution, but only 5-15 students get in every year directly from Harvard undergrad (some more are accepted after taking time off).

If you want to go to Harvard and have the opportunity to do so, go now. The odds of you getting into HMS (or HLS or HBS) are not in your favor, no matter where you go for undergrad. (Of course, if you don’t want to go to Harvard, don’t go!)

Hey guys, honestly sorry to offend by posting this article. And I’m very glad to hear that it’s not the “general view” by most Harvard kids (cause I’m sure there are groups of discontented people at Yale too, just not with as loud of a voice.) Because everyone should be happy at whatever college they choose. :)

Although, I wasn’t trying to say to use that article as a deciding factor or anything. I just thought it would provide something else to think about… because I still believe that while the article may be a bit exaggerated, it still has some element of truth, such as the fact there’s more of an on-campus scene (due to wanting to avoid crappy new haven), and that the residential college system simply owns.

So, take the article with a grain of salt, but don’t completely disregard its main points about Yale.

Oh, and in the end…

THE YALE ADMIT WEBSITE IS THE BEST THING EVER.

Seriously. You will pick Yale in a heartbeat if you spend some time checking out the message boards and getting to know your future classmates through chatrooms. Nothing compares. :)

I’m not sure if Harvard has something similar, since I didn’t even apply there. But if it does, take advantage of it as well.

I second the awesomeness of the Yale Admit Site. I got into Yale SCEA, so I’ve been perusing it for MONTHS, and when I got to Harvard’s admit site, I was like, “what the hell is this crap?” It’s boring, and the cheesy music they play every time you log in makes me want to vomit.

At least you’re lucky enough to get admitted to two outstanding schools. Think of those who did not get in at any Ivy…

I third the awesomness of Yale’s admit site and the crappiness of Harvards. But Harvard has other ways of selling itself…

“Do Harvard students/admits post similar things on the Yale board? I’d hope not… but I don’t know.”

“No, they don’t.”

get over yourselves. please. I think it’s hilarious when Yale kids post stuff on Harvard’s wall b/c pretentious egotists like yourselves then encourage it by getting really uptight and haughty. I simply think it’s a testament to how fun and down to earth Yale is. No one’s above a little rabble-rousing. Except those who kill fun. Proceed to Harvard…

The pattern here speaks for itself.

I sense some tension here… LOL.

I wouldn’t base a college decision on an admit website…but that’s just me. ;)

I honestly don’t know enough about Yale life to compare the two fairly. All I can say is that Harvard undergrad is awesome, and I’ve never met anyone who wished he/she went to Yale. I’ve come across no consensus that Yale undergrad is somehow better. (?) Also, I meet very few pretentious students, and the vast majority of people here are incredibly down to earth, kind, and downright fun to be around. The location is great, academic and extracurricular opportunities are top-notch, etc etc. I’m sure most of the same praise applies to Yale.

So it’s important to visit and get a sense–for yourself–of the atmosphere at each school. I know plenty of people who chose Harvard over Yale, but there was a guy from my high school who easily chose Yale over Harvard. You have to find the one that fits you better personally.

I visited a bunch of schools before I wrote any applications, and I fell in love with Harvard and UPenn, but not really the other Ivies. Some people instantly fall in love with Yale. Or MIT. Or Stanford (that place is gorgeous! it’s like a vacation resort; I don’t know how they get work done there). Or NYU. Or a big state school. Or wherever. Everyone’s experience is different.

Good luck!

^^Co11ege, you made some great points. :)

However, I just want to clarify what we meant about the admits website.

What we meant by the “awesomeness of the Yale admits site” is that it provides an amazing forum and atmosphere to get to know Yale and prospective students. You begin to develop an obsession, constantly checking the message boards to see people’s responses to all sorts of things, ranging from serious inquiries to silly icebreaker games (kinda like CC, except with exclusively future and current Yale students!) Then, when you’ve checked all the recent posts, you mess around with other sweet features that allow you an amazing glimpse into what it’s like to be a student at Yale.

Then, in the end, you log onto to Bulldog Chat, a chatroom for the admitted students (although current students stop in from time to time), where you proceed to blow off hours of homework in order to catch up on what everyone’s doing, talk how much snow someone’s getting while the kids from Florida and Cali laugh, discuss music, sports, world politics… anything and everything.

When you finally close your internet browser, after perusing message boards and dorm pics and chatting it up with your future classmates… you think to yourself “now, how could I ever turn down a place like that?”

THATS what we meant by “the awesomeness of the Yale admits website.” :)

@pink001
Yale’s admitted students web site sounds great. I know one of the reasons I ended up at Harvard was because of the incredible conversations I had with my potential classmates (mostly on MySpace and AIM - high school students weren’t allowed on Facebook back in the day).

Does Harvard still have an admitted students bulletin board? They did when I was accepted - it wasn’t amazing, but I enjoyed it.

@ justforgetme

Yeah lol, it’s actually kind of amazing how attatched you become to future classmates, and then as a direct consequence, the school, just by some chats online or a couple of phone calls. :)
