Harvard Prez Apology: Women Scientists

http://www.president.harvard.edu/speeches/2005/womensci.html

"Last Friday I spoke at a conference on women and science, hosted by the National Bureau of Economic Research. I attended the conference with the intention of reinforcing my strong commitment to the advancement of women in science, and offering some informal observations on possibly fruitful avenues for further research. Ensuing media reports on my remarks appear to have had quite the opposite effect. I deeply regret the impact of my comments and apologize for not having weighed them more carefully...."

that's so refreshing to hear. hopefully this will stem some of the controversy.

And Hitler, Stalin and Mao are all nodding knowingly.

"I deeply regret the impact of my comments and apologize for not having weighed them more carefully..hmm but hes still sticking by the comment..he just regrets the impacts..the comment had..

good point.

I think that's appropriate, though. All he actually said was 'look, women are underrepresented. here are a bunch of potential reasons. oh, look at this interesting research, maybe we should look into this stuff more.' I don't think he should have to apologize for tackling a difficult topic and saying 'let's have a look at this.' However, the IMPACT of the comments went far beyond what was actually said until suddenly everyone was angry at that sexist old white man running Harvard. So yeah, it's appropriate to regret that, but I don't think an apology was necessary for the comments themselves.

Summers is a dinosauer spewing outdated, ill-informed, hackneyed slanders about women in science (all of which I'm sure he still secretly holds to be true). The good news, he's stumbled into his own private tar pit. He's now in a struggle to save his reputation and standing in academia. Me, I hope he sinks under for the crimes he's already committed against women faculty at Harvard.

But don't get me started....I got midterms to study for.

Gee. It took a media blowout for him to realize he's a misogynist? I owe President Summers some thanks. If I do get into Harvard, his remarks will make deciding between Harvard and Yale so much easier.

hehe lol!

Yes, you'll show him llamapyjamas. He will be crushed that you won't be attenting Harvard. I wonder if he'll be able to get someone to take your spot?

Of course someone will fill the spot. If it's a spot in Engineering and Science, 2 times out of 3, it will be a male.

I was just poking fun. Did you see the link I posted in two of the other threads? Very interesting.

yeah. i don't think the overall matriculation rate will be affected. larry summers will hardly be crushed.

Nor do I think the male/female ratio among engineering concentrators at Harvard will be substantially different from that at Princeton, Cornell, Yale, Penn or Columbia/FU.

Harvard DEAS added 5 new professors this past Fall. Four males, one female.

that doesn't mean they don't discriminate.

You certainly have a giant chip on your shoulder. For your sake, I hope this not so glaringly obvious to the interviewers at all the schools to which you have applied.

summers said repeatedly to the people at that conference that he was GOING TO PROVOKE THEM

he has apologized (in my opinion, unnecessarily) for what he said, and has been duly dragged through the mud by feminists who have every right to want equal representation in universities, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HE SAID WAS A PROBLEM

his comments were taken out of context and blown up - im going to have to side with Byerly on this one. Even though im a liberal, the way this whole "incident" was handled was completely wrong. He's a good president, and he's willing to provoke and challenge the intelligent people that are employed at Harvard. By all means, isn't that what we want from the preeminent university in the United States?

Here's some insight into the lady who "outed" Larry Summers as a woman-hater:

haha great article byerly

i loved that last line

"Now feminists like Hopkins use the same tactic to silence ideologically unacceptable ideas and to intimidate the intellectually curious. That's the stereotype Hopkins is reinforcing: that feminists and the Left are pro-science and pro-scholarship as long as they already agree with the conclusions."

however, i am a member of "the Left," i take slight offense that this attention-hungry professor got thrown in my camp lol
