well maributt, you left out a few people. people like me who are neither of the two :)

and does anyone know anything about the intro to bio class at harvard??

yeah i'm not rich
but i AM hoping for qb haha

Yay I just got in! short session II baby. probably going to register for basic journalism taught by Andrea McCarren

yayy. go join the Facebook group titled "Harvard SSP '07" :)

hey i went there last year and i decided to try to answer some of your questions (although to be honest i only read the firs, second and seventh page:p)

as far as finacial aid goes i only got enough to cover tuition therefore i had to do ask from friend for money to cover the room and board. anyway i do know someone who actually was first told that they would only cover tuition (ie last year that was 4400$ if i remeber correctly) but the person wrote a letter back explaining their circumstance and saying she would love to come is there any way that they could provide more aid (sorry i dont know how the person phrased the letter if i did i would tell you guys!)

if your a incoming senior the rules are really slack pretty much do whatever you want as long as that doesn't include drinking and drugs!!!!(i knew of at least 6 people getting kicked out for drinking on fourth of july alone!!!) yeah you can stay up as late as you want (seriously the average time ppl in my dorm went to bed was like 2-4am!!)

if i were you dont take an 8 credit language course if you want to be able to impress colleges later on the fall with your grade!! EVERYONE i know who took a language course was average a C- (one person actually left b/c they didnt want their failing grade to anyway appear on his college apps so instead that person withdrawed!!) most were failing or failing but hoping that the prof would somehow curve it...

a word of advice the 8 weeks is the way to go.....i know it seems like your whole summer and it is but seriously when your only there for 4 weeks you really dont get to experience everything...

ohh yeaaa honestly before going there i was expecting alot of rich kids when if fact if there were lots there you would never know.....or at least you dont notice it much....

hey beachbunny -
what was the most popular class last year? the one that most people enjoyed?
the ones i'm looking into are Intro to Political Philosophy, Law & Society, Intro to Philosophy, or American Foreign Policy. do you have any idea about those?

anybody take a four week short-session course?

i originally was going to go for a 8 week course in biology or chemistry or something..but theres a bunch of stuff that I want to do this summer as well..so

the only 4 week..short-session hat interests me at all is "CSCI S-111a Intensive Introduction to Computer Science Using Java (31840)"..anybody ever take this course? I haven't done Java in like 2 years tho..

also i was looking at the courses page and noticed the following two courses:

MATH S-300 Math for Teaching Arithmetic (32122)
(Print View)
Bret Benesh
(4 credits: GR, NC) M-F 9-11:30 am, Science Center, Room 216. Short session I. Tuition $1,100. Limited enrollment.
July 2-July 20. Harvard College students see additional information.

*MATH S-310 Graph Theory: Investigating the Mathematical Process (32161)
(Print View)
John D. Boller
(4 credits: GR, NC) M-F 12:30-3 pm, Science Center, Room 216. Short session I. Tuition $1,100. Limited enrollment.
July 2-July 20. Harvard College students see additional information.

I mean both of these courses are extremely extremely short, but the topics are interesting. I would think I prolly wont get much out of the SSP by only staying there for 2 weeks..but I would still like to know if anybody has taken these courses?

hey-spiffy stars

well by word of mouth it seemed that law and society had lots of ppl in it (although ppl said it was the most popular class i personally didnt know anyone in my dorm who took it!)

i actually knew at least 5 ppl who took the intro to philosophy class. pretty much what i heard was that it had lots of assigned reading but according to one of my friends who was in the class only one person in the class actually read EVERYTHING! therefore everyone i knew just skimmed the reading assignment or scanned though the reading assignment when a paper was done!. if i remember correctly there was a total of three essays due. and for the final the prof atually told the students in advance the topic of the final(which was just a in-class essay) and the students were allowed to bring in a one page paper in "notes" therefore everyone i knew who took the final wrote there final paper in advance to taking the final then just printed there paper into 1 page of notes and then copied there essay into the "blue book" or whatever was used at the final! so in that aspect if you are a fairly good writer and thinker than take that class b/c it seemed like a pretty easy grade....the worse i heard of ppl getting was "B's" on their papers and in addition the prof offered extra credit!!!!!

and honestly DONT WORRY about your decision in classes right now....b/c i really thought that before i got to Harvard whatever class i chose i was stuck with!!! so when the first thing my proctor told me was dont buy a book for you class b/c the "first class" is shopping week! and literally it is so pick the classes you want then check the schedules of the others and just plan on checking out those other classes and see there syllabus and see how your final grade is put together and if you enjoy the class and if the prof and tf is good.

and who knows some students found that they really enjoyed this third class but since you cant take a 3rd class ask the professor of that 3rd class you like and see if you can audit!!!!(you never know it might end up being that prof of the class you decide to audit that writes you that awesome recommendation for your colleges in the fall!) now my prof who i ended up having wouldn't have minded at all if someone audited his class (in fact someone from my dorm asked to do so but had to stop coming b/c she needed that time to study for her other classes) but there might be some prof who says it has to be "official" ie have to ask the ssp office and the class i wanted to audit the prof was like that....so i just realized i should concentrate on my own class....but i do know someone audited the calculus class so ppl did do it!

anyway hope that helps....sorry its soo long but i didnt want to leave anything out!

sory i cant help i took the 8 week course but someone i knew took the 4unit computer science course for the 8 weeks and he really seemed to like it...(i honestly dont know more than that....honestly my best wisdom is even if you miss out on other things its better to do the 8 weeks....so if you could at all possibly do that then do! everyone i knew who was only there for 4 weeks wished they had stayed for 8 weeks

im thinking of taking a 2nd session 4 week course (i know beachbunny, but i have a LOT of things to do this summer) -- does this session have a seperate opening week thing? do we still get to go to college prep workshops?
also, who do we room with? someone who has been here since the begining or someone who is also in the 4 week session?

anyone get questbridge decisions yet?

Hey,
got admitted to Short Session II just a few weeks ago. Got financial aid, too. Man, I'm so glad. wouldn't have known how to pay for it myself.
I registered for International Law (Beth Simmons). Anyone else interested in Law? Anyone who knows about Beth Simmons?

you all seem to be so well informed about scholarship stuff like the questbridge thing. Could you please share more of your information about scholarship possibilities for college with me please.

QuestBridge decisions go out tomorrow. I have a bad feeling about my decision...lol. oh well, I'm going to SSP nevertheless. The financial aid covered most of my 8-week session and now I only have to pay $1700. I LOVE HARVARD!

short session I Theories of globalization seminar here, anyone take this class?

spiffystars, the financial aid from Harvard itself? That's a very very generous aid becuase I emailed the director and he said that they only sometimes give over half aid!!
well good luck on Questbridge!!!

lol yeah. they gave me $4550 :D let's just say the parentals don't make as much as some others...
thank you!

I heard from the questbridge post on the financial aid forum that "semi-finalists" already recieved a email. Did you get one?

nope... i haven't

me neither but questbridge is known for being a really disorganized organization. in fact i know people that think its just a middle man and a poor one at that. its mainly for minorities and 1st generation and my understanding is if you don't meet that criteria first your chances are nil. even with great scores, grades, recs and ec's. i wish i hadn't wasted time with the application and went directly to SSP i bet its too late now to apply for FA at SSP.

hey Luci89, i want to take that class too! :)
