Harvard SSP

hey grits, thanks so much for the help!
would you mind telling me / CC how your daughter did in biochem? A .. B or worse?
and i think I will take introduction to biology at Harvard SSP, only because I dont want to take AP Biology at my high school :)

K,

I found out about the SSP in March, and I applied around then. I
m done with my apps and everything, only my teacher and counselor are taking FOREVER to fill out the recs!! I
m scared that I applied too late to get in now... Do you think I
ll make it? I mean, all my PSATs are fine (90 percentile is ok I guess), my GPA's pretty weak though, like 3.78, butI
m the only one from my school applying, but I got suspended the first week of Freshman year (I`m a sophomore) Anyways, what do you guys think?

depends.........what excatly did u get susspended for?

I have a question. In my application I said I was interested in taking either a psych. or debate type class (short session), but looking at their course selections, if I get accepted I want to take the journalism course. How would I go about doing that? perhaps I should wait until I get accepted into the program first...

you can change your mind later, 8dbordel.

anyone else apply through questbridge?

i just finished the grueling application last night.. i feel like i've lost some of my soul to those essays

maributt, I was already accepted to SSP but I DID apply via QuestBridge because well...a fully paid tuition would be nice!

My essay was pretty bad because I finished it in one day. The short answers were okay though. Procrastination, hooray!

I hope you and I both get it..I wonder how many they give out. Are you going to do their College Match program also?

umm, no probably not, because i don't want to be forced into a college like scripps or amherst or something and my dream college isn't on there.

so this questbridge college prep thingy can either get you:

full scholarship to harvard's ssp (10 awards)
6 hours of college advising
invitation to college prep conference (800 awards)
laptop

if i'm not mistaken.

any of those would be great for me, except for the conferences which don't pay for your travel expenses or anything.

Hey Guys-

In my opinion, it seems the admissions into SSP is surprisingly rather non competitive. I completed my application around mid March. My GPA floats around a 3.7, and I was only 90th percentile on my PSAT. Moreover, feeling that I didn't have a chance because of those stats I wrote fairly mediocre short answer responses (although my annotated english essay was really good). I suppose my rec was decent as well. I got a response within 2 days of sending my app first class delivery mail! I'm planning on taking the Intro to Bio class because I won't be taking the AP bio test.

hey knickknachpatty, i think i am doing the same thing! im still waiting for letters from other programs before i say "yes" to harvard :)

I did the QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship. Will I have to apply separately to Harvard SSP? I am really counting on winning the full scholarship to SSP. I really want to do it, if my cancer research program doesn't come through.

hey murky- like I said before, it's probably safer to apply to SSP outside of QB just in case you don't get the QB scholarship. SSP offers fin aid if you apply for it, but the deadline for fin aid is like May 1st or something.

Eh, nah. I don't want to go if it's not fully paid. I know I'm a total stickler.. but I'd rather not go if I have to pay (even if there is generous financial aid). So basically I'm counting on winning the scholarship. If not, oh well! Classes at Northwestern sound rather charming ;-)

murky - you can always turn down their offer even after they accept you! And even after they agree to give you financial aid :) you should def give it a shot!

nope you don't have to apply separately for the harvard or notre dame programs.

i check marked the global issues thing at notre dame. i hope it's not as competitive as the harvard thing, although there only are 10 spots for all the summer programs together so i probably won't get any.

actually come to think of it, i'm sure they won't actually have quotas to meet for each location. it'll probably be based on individual merit and not which camps you're applying to.

:(

Aw, Spiffster. I keep coming up with new nicknames (Spiffy, Spiffster). I'll apply outside of QB, too ;)

I think I only selected the Harvard SSP program (long session).

hey, do any of you know if harvard's financial aid covers room and board?

ooh! i have another question =D,

how generous is harvard with financial aid?

to those of you who know your fin aid packages, how much did you get? (you dont have to share if you dont want to though ;) )

unfortunately, harvard's financial aid doesn't cover room and board (or at least that's what the people there said) ... and i think someone from last year told me fin aid packages are kind of paltry ...

but i mean its harvard, it should be amazing even if it is a tad pricey

yup, basically harvard ssp is for the rich + a few questbridge kids
