Harvard Summer School

From my hall (Canaday F):
EA/ED acceptances: Harvard, Duke, Princeton, and Columbia.
Deferred: Yale, Harvard, and Georgetown.
There are more people, of course.. but I only heard from these seven people.
I wouldn't recommend going as a sophomore (rising junior) as well, because of the curfew. The rising seniors have a more flexible curfew. I don't think anyone snuck out of our hall.
I also recommend not getting an 9AM class- both of mine were really early, which did leave room for me to do whatever I wanted in the afternoon.. but I missed or came in late to some of my classes. If you're able to wake up, go for it, but I'm not a morning person. Granted, some of the profs don't care, but my expository writing class was very small, and they noticed if you missed a lot.
I don't think this makes too much of a difference to admissions.

can someone comment on the level of the politics courses taught in the summer. i'm interested in taking part in them, although i'm a little skeptical seeing as though i do not have much of a political foundation and this is Harvard after all. thanks

Amercain Foreign Policy was great. I hadn't even taken AP US Govt yet, and I did fine. The class was about 40-50 people, but we def had classes where only about 15-20 people showed up. There were quite a few high schoolers and undergrads. There were a couple of grad students, but they had some different requirements.

The AFP prof was great (Rezvani), and although some people didn't do so well in the class, it was def. possible to make an A.

I just sent in my application to the Harvard SSP. I'm a rising junior, although I live in England so I may be classified as a rising senior (I hope so). Apparently its pretty easy to get into the programs and I have pretty good grades, so I'm not overly worried about admissions.

I was just wondering if the curfews and overall babying really do distort your view of college social life, and if you can still have a good time despite them. What specific time is the curfew btw? Also, do some classes (like small seminars) book up too quickly so you can't attend them?

Finally, I'm not really applying to the program for the admissions leg-up, but it sure would be nice anyways :) Can anyone who went to the Harvard (or Yale or Stanford, I guess) program tell me where they and their classmates ended up at college?

Summer Session improving college admission?
General answer is no, it's still based on one's overall record.
It can be a help, if one does very well at rigorous (summer) classes.

Both of my kids (2 years apart) attended YSS (Yale),
both accepted EA at Yale.
In each child's "circle of close YSS friends" (group size ~10),
there was 1 EA acceptance, rest denied/deferred,
and no RD acceptance either.

can one apply to summer school even before ones decided which college to go to?
also is it wise to go to SS even before u start college,,
im an intl.. so would getting used to the system be a deterrant?

I think going to a summer program at any of the top schools is a good thing to do before you apply, because you will have known what it's like and really gotten a feel for college.

k.. but can i apply say late april and yet get in? i was planning to go to berkeley which is supposed to have the cheapest summer school prog( doesnt it?),,
so will i get admission if i apply then?
also do i need permission from my future school for it?
or should i apply right now when Im not sure where Ill be going?

I have no idea, but I'm pretty sure there's deadlines on the programs. Check with each school to see when theirs is.

i checked berkeleys site.. theres no deadline..!
i guess they stop receiving applicants once all the seats are filled.. any idea when that usually happens

Hey,

I'm going to the Harvard SSP program this summer (2006) and was planning on taking Neurobiology. Has anybody taken this before as a sophomore? Can someone tell me whether this is a good course to take?

hey, im a soph too. i just signed up for American Foreign policies and Intro. to Philosophy. Im worried that ill say something stupid. heh whatever... will it be a lot of work and are there any recomendations?
