i don´t think Princeton and yale has more prestige than stanford..at least at an international level.harvard , stanford yale princeton.

If you want to study Law,Yale
IF you want to study Medicine, Harvard
If you want to study Business,Harvard
If you want to study Engineering, Stanford
If you want to study Physical Science,Princeton

Ranking HYPS by majors

politics: H>S>Y=P
psycology: S>H>Y>P
sociology:S=P=H>Y
economics:H=P=S>Y

Politics it would definitely be Yale as one of the top, they have possibly the best department for poli sci department.

Ranking HYPS by faculty strength, according to membership in US national academy of sciences:

1) NATIONAL Academy of Science (NAS)
Harvard (167)
Stanford (131)
Princeton (74)
Yale (60)

2) National academy of engineering (NAE)
Stanford (85)
Princeton (21)
Harvard (18)
Yale (7)

3) Institute of medicine (IOM)
Harvard (100+)
Stanford (54)
Yale (40)
Princeton (10-)

Bescraze,

Yale has the best history department, not the best politics department. Harvard and Stanford are definitely better than Yale in political science.

What are HYPS most noted for?

IMO,

H is noted for its medical school, for being the oldest university in USA. And Harvard is HARVARD!

S is noted for its huge contribution to silicon valley, to modern technology (internet, yahoo, google, SUN, microprocessor, GPS, radar, and gene cloning), and its sports.

P is noted for Albert Einstein, John Nash, John Von Neuman, and Andew Wiles.

Y is noted for its law school, plus President Bush and President Clinton.

The absolutely #1 fields for HYPS

H has the best medical school in the world, plus the best political science department. I don't want to say H has the best business school, because Stanford and Warton are just as good.

S has the best computer science department, the best psycology department, and the best education school in the world.

P has the best math department in the world.

Y has the best law school.

It seems like everyone and their mom on CC care about only science.

That's because science > all. Don't like it? Go waste your life and become a lawyer then, lol

^ lol I think that's absolutely absurd, and I'm a math major. I thought history, English, etc. were worthless in high school because they involved little more than memorization, but after seeing how the humanities are treated in a rigorous academic setting, they have earned my respect.

I'm speechless. Such mind-numbing...

I didn't think any of it was worthless, and I never will. I'm just saying science > them...doesn't mean them = 0....

I'm pretty sure piccolojunior (btw like your name) was kidding kwu. Weasel8488, I felt the same way about humanities, but then I took the AP English Exam, which is actually supposed to be a watered down version of real humanities. Oh man, made me respect how difficult it is to analyze writing and to write critically and coherently. Those people who say math and science are harder than humanities probably aren't humanity majors. It's good for us math/sci/engineering students to know that there's a definitive answer to your problem set. :)

^Well, good writing is necessary for m/s/e. Deep m/s/e knowledge isn't necessary for humanities majors. But I see what you're saying.

When it comes to UNDERGRADUATE education Princeton blows everyone else out of the water.

When it comes to GRADUATE education I'd give the overall edge to Harvard.

MIT should also be thrown into the mix for graduate education as it DOMINATES economics, engineering, planning, physics, math, real estate, architecture and anything science related.

Haha, I choose MIT. (I know it wasn't part of the OP's original selection but hey, it's HYPSM :D)

My personal preference (I haven't visited Harvard or Stanford yet):
1. Yale
2. Princeton
3. Stanford
4. Harvard

I really liked the feeling I had at Yale (felt like I was at home) and New Haven is like the perfect city for me. I find the campus gorgeous and the students really friendly and just an overall chill campus. Plus, humanities is my thing (with maybe some science), so it works for me.

Princeton's academics (IMO) is rather unbeatable. The campus is also gorgeous, but I didn't like the vibe I got when I went to visit....

I think I'd prefer Stanford over Harvard because of its location, but I'm just not sure.

MIT dominates Engineering? Sciences? Economics? Math?

Not so much.

The School of Engineering's graduate program has achieved the top score in the U.S. News rankings each year since 1994, the earliest date for which the Office of the Provost's Institutional Research team has records.

In addition to having the top U.S. graduate engineering school, MIT placed first in six of 10 engineering specialties--aeronautics and astronautics, chemical, computer, electrical, materials and mechanical engineering. The Institute's nuclear engineering program was ranked second, civil engineering fourth, biomedical engineering sixth and environmental engineering 10th. MIT is also ranked 1st for undergraduate engineering.

MIT's economics department has been ranked #1 consistently for over 15 years. It's undergraduate business program is ranked 2nd and its MBA program is ranked 4th.

When it comes to the hard sciences a degree from MIT means more than a degree from anywhere else in the world. That's not coincidence.

MIT also has the most #1 ranked graduate programs of any school in the WORLD.

I think post#23 sums it up perfectly.
