Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT Cross-Admits for Class of 2014

I see that Stanford is 4/16; I know its a VERY small sample, lol, but is this rate similiar to years in the past? Does this mean possible good things for people on the waitlist?

~CF08

@collegefan08, Stanford has over-enrolled for the past few years. I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high if you were on the wait-list, though I wish you the best of luck!

TheAscendancy - While this was true for the class of 2012 and 2011, stanford did accept (I believe) 127 people off the waitlist last year. Also, Stanford accepted 2300 instead of their normal 2400 people this year, even though they are expecting the same class size for the class of 2014. Just wondering, does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thank you!
~CF

larmonely - any particular reason why you skipped 3 other schools that were listed between the last tabulation and your Harvard entry, namely MIT, Yale and Stanford?

This actually looks like a bell curve.

Even if 4/16 were representative, it doesn’t mean anything for your waitlist chances. Suppose the pool of HYPM cross-admits at Stanford had a 25% yield… the other, presumably much larger pool will have a much higher yield that causes it to average out to 70% or whatever they’re expecting.

This comment makes no sense. It doesn’t look like a bell curve at all no matter how you try to spin it…

“Scientific Sample
Synonymous with Probability Sample. A group of cases selected from a population by a random process. Every member of the population has a known, nonzero probability of being selected.”

Your sampling method does even begin to to meet the definition because it is far from being random. The first bias it introduces is that it addresses only those admits who happen to read CC. There is no way to know whether CC readers are a random sampling of the entire population.

Second, it relies on people to volunteer an answer from their end rather than randomly selecting from the entire population of cross-admits and seeking out their answers from your end. Data drawn from people who volunteer to respond to a blanket poll rather than having their responses individually solicited in a proper poll is notoriously unreliable, since people may well have different degrees of motivation to respond based on their choices. In this case, someone who is choosing an underdog school that is clearly on the make and eager to move up may well have a greater motivation to respond to the poll about all the great schools he turned down in order to make his school look better than does someone who routinely accepted the higher-ranked or more famous school. Thus, those who choose to respond are not random.

Third, it does nothing to prevent someone from voting more than once. Thus, the school that double and triple responders will be over-represented in the sample. Again, non-random.

Fourth, it does nothing to ensure that people responding were even admitted to any of these schools in the first place. Thus, any data from those people will add nothing but inaccuracy to the sample. Again, non-random.

As I said, merely an amusing parlor game. Nothing more. Just so long as we all realize that and don’t take the results too seriously there is no harm in a little fun. Carry on.

cour, fully agree…

You did not understand me. Those you described can not predict stock markets. That is where the western “linearization” of our “pink noise” minds can not match the “brown noise” of reality. Nothing works when it comes to predict stock markets. Nothing is scientific but a kind of religion or believing.
