Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT Cross-Admits for Class of 2014

I’m choosing MIT over Harvard and Stanford.

Harvard has more students than Yale or Princeton…

Others covered this; Yale’s budget increased 10% from the 100M you cited.

Universally is a much better word choice than pervasively. Thank you for clarifying how the financial aid effects yield.

I wonder if there are many cross-admits that went somewhere outside HYPSM…

If you need a larger sample size,
I can give you guys a couple from my school and peeps i met during the admit weekends.

Vanderbilt over Yale and Princeton. music major and she apparently likes the country-ish Nashville.

MIT over Princeton. he wants to be a hardcore rocket scientist. course 16 if you will.

MIT over Yale and Stanford. He just went to CPW and pretty much committed there. He didn’t got to the BDD or the admits weekend for Stanford because he had a track meet.

Stanford over Princeton and Yale. weather. and he’s Stanford athletics fan.

MIT over Harvard. This guy’s group won the Siemens. from Orlando. he just thought MIT was cooler. he’s playing baseball too.

Stanford over Yale. “fit” he said. though I have no idea why he chose that. i guess weather also has to do with it.

MIT over HYPS. He fell in love with MIT after leaning on Harvard most of the time.

Harvard over Yale and Princeton. she doesn’t really care where she’ll go. her parents forced her to go to Harvard and she has quite a number of relatives at Cambridge/Boston.

MIT over Princeton. she liked Boston and Cambridge. that’s pretty much it.

Yale over Princeton. I haven’t asked him yet.

MIT over Yale. Boston/Cambridge factor as well.

BU over MIT. because of financial aid.

I hope this helps the OP obtain a larger sample size. We all know this is not the best way to conduct such a survey but it’s still better than nothing right? at least we have a general idea even though if it is flawed :p

I’m not sure if the first one and the last counts since they are not cross-admits.

I still have a bunch more. If you need, I can give you a couple more. In addition, I’m trying to give peeps that don’t use CC. I’m pretty sure people I know have posted. I can’t really know since I do not know their CC usernames. So, I’m giving the decisions of those I know that do not use CC.

sorry for my bad articulation. time for me to sleep :]

It doesn’t matter how large the sample size gets; if it’s self-reported convenience sampling, it’s useless other than for fun.

Yes, I am well aware of that. Just wanted to make the OP happy :D

There are people who turn down these schools for Rice/Baylor, etc.

Post #170 is very interesting. Year-over-year comparisons might cancel out some of the biases inherent in this type of analysis.

Perhaps Yale is in fact improving it’s cross-admit yield.

^^Hoping that the error in one bogus analysis will somehow correct the error in another bogus analysis is, at best, wishful thinking.

Does anyone know what percent of students that HYPSM lose go to schools other than HYPSM?

I imagine that MIT loses some to CalTech and Harvey Mudd and, in addition to the other 5 Ivies, that UC Berkeley, Duke, Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona and UnivChicago take a fair share away.

Based on the above numbers the cross-admit yields are as follows (for class of 2014):

Harvard-Yale (41%, 59%)
Harvard-Princeton ( 75%, 25%)
Harvard-Stanford (44%,56%)
Harvard-MIT (43%,57%)

Yale-Princeton (85%,15%)
Yale-Stanford (66%,33%)
Yale-MIT (33%,66%)

Princeton-Stanford (38%,62%)
Princeton-MIT (70%,30%)

Stanford-MIT (50%,50%)

Net cross-admit win/loss
-Yale +14
-Harvard +1
-MIT -2
-Stanford -5
-Princeton -8

The biggest overlaps in cross-admits are (as percentage of total cross-admits)
-Harvard-Yale 27%
-Yale-Princeton 21%
-Princeton-Stanford 21%
-Harvard-Princeton 19%
-Princeton-MIT 16%

Lowest Overlaps:
-Yale-MIT 5%
-Stanford-MIT 6%
-Harvard-MIT 11%
-Harvard-Stanford 14%
-Stanford-Yale 14%

Harvard also admitted to Yale, Stanford

cellardweller

By my count, you have the wrong numbers for the Princeton/Stanford cross admits. The cross-admitted students chose Princeton 62% of the time over Stanford.

Harvard-Princeton

BUt after seeing all the facebook photos of Houseparties, I’m beginning to wonder if I made the right choice…

I’m wondering if Yale really does have the best yield from HYPS cross-admits, and the worst yield with cross admits to LACs.
