lthough HYPS claims to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need, each university dedicates a different sum to undergraduate financial aid, which is a far better measure than basic funding or endowment dollars per student attending. Harvard, for instance, presented a $158M (Class of 2014) budget in financial assistance to this year’s admitted undergraduates (an increase of 9% from the year before). By comparison, Stanford allotted $112M (2014), Princeton $104M (2013), and Yale $100M (2013).

According to both the College Board and institutionally published profiles, the reported average financial package is indeed most generous at Harvard, in magnitude and in valid proportion to annual costs:</p>

And by “spectacular fortitude,” I was simply implying that Harvard is pervasively acknowledged as the world’s most desirable university, which explains its consistent position atop the yield charts. It’s trend-setting financial aid initiatives to lower- and middle-class families (i.e. 10%-income contribution) help to preserve that.

<li><p>MIT over Princeton. he wants to be a hardcore rocket scientist. course 16 if you will.</p></li>
<li><p>MIT over Yale and Stanford. He just went to CPW and pretty much committed there. He didn’t got to the BDD or the admits weekend for Stanford because he had a track meet.</p></li>
<li><p>Stanford over Princeton and Yale. weather. and he’s Stanford athletics fan.</p></li>
<li><p>MIT over Harvard. This guy’s group won the Siemens. from Orlando. he just thought MIT was cooler. he’s playing baseball too.</p></li>
<li><p>Stanford over Yale. “fit” he said. though I have no idea why he chose that. i guess weather also has to do with it.</p></li>
<li><p>MIT over HYPS. He fell in love with MIT after leaning on Harvard most of the time.</p></li>

<p>I hope this helps the OP obtain a larger sample size. We all know this is not the best way to conduct such a survey but it’s still better than nothing right? at least we have a general idea even though if it is flawed :p</p>

<p>Post #170 is very interesting. Year-over-year comparisons <em>might</em> cancel out <em>some</em> of the biases inherent in this type of analysis. </p>

<p>Does anyone know what percent of students that HYPSM lose go to schools other than HYPSM?</p>

<p>I imagine that MIT loses some to CalTech and Harvey Mudd and, in addition to the other 5 Ivies, that UC Berkeley, Duke, Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona and UnivChicago take a fair share away.</p>
