Harvey Mudd vs. Rice vs. Brandeis vs. ...

That’s a hard choice to understand, but thanks for reporting back. The comments about Chicago seem way off the mark, so one has to question such dubious logic. I guess the grass is always greener. I think Brandais would have been a better away experience than a suburb in LA, but I live near there and know kids that go there so it doesn’t have the exotic appeal as somewhere far.

I hope you enjoy it. the Mudd kids are a tight bunch. I do know kids at Claremont who were able to take classes at the other colleges, but not the Mudd kids.

Eh? We’re able to enroll at other colleges just like everyone else. I was down at Pomona for two of my classes this past semester; I registered for them like just the rest of my classes. It’s all the same, you just need to take at least half your courses at your own college in the end I believe. Mudders have the same open access everyone else does.

Congrats on the decision Neferjeane! See you at Orientation!

I’m also looking at Rice vs HMC. I am worried I’ll be tired/ burned out after college and want to work before grad school. If I am looking for a job, anywhere other than California, will anyone know about the so called grade deflation at HMC or understand about a general engineering degree? Thanks.

Robots: I don’t think you will have a problem finding an engineering job graduating from HMC. When engineering hiring managers interview candidates they nearly always do a technical-type interview and ask candidates what projects they worked on and maybe even pose an engineering problem during the interview. “How does a toilet work?” is an old favorite. HMC will prepare you well for such an interview.

ricegal. Do you attend Rice? Any helpful information regarding the engineering program?

Robots: I’m a parent. I did attend Rice for engineering. The program was terrific. Small classes, good students. I liked that Rice had no core - just distribution requirements. Other than my engineering classes I could pretty much take what I wanted. Everyone I know who graduated in engineering was well-trained and has done well in their careers. But, I also know at least one person from HMC in my generation who is very sharp and said the experience at HMC was similar.

OK. Great no core, but you felt well prepared for you specific engineering pursuits. If you don’t mind me asking, if you had to go to engineering school now, which area would you choose? Theoretical vs more hands on? I really like robotics, but I’m thinking EE.

excellent choice i must add!

Go for Rice. It’s the best school for you in your list – great campus environment, excellent academics, great student body, great social scene and top school for your major.
