Has anybody looked into majoring in Environmental Economics?

How would I stand with a BS in Food and Resource Economics with a focus on Environmental Economics? What would be a good minor for this?

Middlebury has a very well known environmental studies major and I’m sure you could focus on economics within that. They have also recently added a minor in food policy. Minor (and even major) will become more clear to you once you get to a good college, so it’s probably too early to worry about it. To get ideas, look at the course offerings at schools that are reachable for you and are known for environmental studies.

I majored in Environmental Economics at Chico State. I graduated their Bachelor of Arts program and minored in Environmental Studies. I have yet to start making the “big bucks”, but I have found that the knowledge I gained from this program has really enhanced my wisdom.

Good minors to go with that major would include business, environmental science, or political science/public policy/environmental policy. From the title of your proposed major, I’m guessing that it’s in an agricultural economics department. Often, majors in the ag college require some core courses in basic science and ag, or (in the case of an ag econ dept), some basic business courses. If your dept. has one or both of these requirements, this could address the prerequisite courses for a minor in either a business or environmental science.

More students, who attend landgrant public universities, should consider the course offerings in ag econ. depts. Not only is ag econ and food policy an important subject in its own right, but these departments often have relevant courses in international trade, environmental economics and policy, development economics, land economics, commodity futures, etc.
