Has anyone accepted Berkeley over HYPSM, Ivies + Caltech, Duke, Chicago, NU & Rice?

I was accepted to Barnard College of Columbia University, but chose Cal over it because it was much more affordable.

Well, I want to study mathematical economics. I was accepted to both UC Berkeley and the University of Chicago. While I felt (and still feel) that UChicago would be better for me from an educational perspective, Berkeley is still an amazing school that is a great value considering in-state tuition. If I had the choice to make over again, I would have still picked Berkeley.

I turned down MIT, CALTECH, Stanford and UCLA. I hope I would not regret in future ^^

Turned down Stanford for Berk (Grad). No regrets yet, than again I dont start til September.

grad’s on another scale though. but nice that you got into both. =D

Yeah, it’s not unusual that some people have turned down Stanford for Berkeley for grad school. I know some Berkeley grad school alumni who turned down Harvard and MIT for Berkeley too. Again, I know some, so that means, a number of people that did that.

I’ve picked Berkeley over Caltech, Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth, and Columbia :).

Anymore respondents?

does a hypothetical count? because I would have turned down Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Michigan, Illinois and possibly Caltech, Rice, and MIT for Berkeley. The last three would pend a visit.

this hypothetical assumes I was admitted to all those, which I wasn’t.

^ No; that doesn’t count. :D

This thread assumes that everyone has been accepted to some top schools of Cal’s caliber.

I picked Berkeley over Cornell. I also know of another classmate who chose Berkeley over Cornell and yet another who chose Berkeley over JHU.

At the same time one of my good friends is going to JHU over Berkeley simply because my school is literally sending 60 kids to berkeley this year.

How is it different for HS outside of cali? Is bekeley better … EVEN better regarded?

Well, I was put on the Cornell and Carnegie Mellon waitlists, but decided not to accept my spot because I already had Berkeley in the bag. And when I got into Berkeley, Illinois and Michigan became pretty much obsolete.

So that’s not hypothetical, I guess.

Berkeley’s well regarded out here (midwest). I’d say moreso than JHU. A lot of people don’t have Berkeley on their radar, though, because it is so far away.

I’m going to Berkeley over Northwestern and NYU-Stern (with 27k financial aid)… o and I got in spring at Berkeley but go into Northwestern :)… shows my devotion to Berkeley :D… I’m doing FPF

Wow! Where did you go to high school?

Monta Vista High School in Cupertino, CA. I’m not even exaggerating. We have a graduating class around 670 though.

Schools around my area (ie lynbrook, saratoga…etc.) also send quite a few.

Heh, another Monta Vista grad.

heh, what school are you from tasty :)?

Monta Vista 06.

There must be something in the water that you drink at Monta Vista. ;)

Berkeley over Chicago. Their CoC suited me more.
