My daughter won local scholarships (between $500 and $1500). The total was about $6000. Not big, but the money added up and was appreciated:).
My foster son won Gates Millennium in 2015. There were 57,000 applicants and 1,000 winners.
He also won state level Horatio Alger, a merit scholarship from his college and a couple of local ones.
My daughter won around $8,500 in outside, a merit scholarship and several local ones. The merit scholarships were the most valuable for her $$wise.
Both kids had excellent academics, test scores, volunteer work, leadership roles, recommendations, and stellar essays. Both worked early and often on searching and applying for scholarships. Many more were applied to than won It was a part time job for each of them.
My kids got several local ones (town level, county level and one got a metro-area level one). Totals varied by year, high of $5500 one year, low of $2000 another. Our county has a common app of sorts that is used to apply to a lot of local ones at once that are administered by that county foundation. Essay(s) were required, some considered financial need, some were only for certain majors or schools, some were for high school seniors and some for current college students.
Late to the party, but yes. They are amazing, but wait time is brutal. I did both local, national, and college specific. went .500 on the first 2, and 100% with colleges that accepted or all but one.
My daughter won 2 local scholarships, plus one from the college foundation, and one national one related to her field of study. She tried a handful of those national ones you find online and we were shocked to learn she received this one, $1500 renewable. She is at community college, so the $5750 she has won so far is going a long way, more than half the total tuition for her degree. She will apply for a foundation scholarship every semester so hopefully there will be a little bit more coming. Also will probably apply for a few more national ones here and there if they seem worth a shot. She is an artist so the next one she’ll try is art related as she already has pieces she can enter.
I almost didn’t have her apply for one local one as it was for STEM related majors, but I guess Graphic Design counts (technology). She slapped it together on the way home from a track meet for a due date the following day and got $1500 and some earbuds
