I am interested in taking a theory exam next year, probably level 5, and self-study until then. I've been playing piano for roughly 8 years and flute for around 5 years but haven't had any 'formal' theory training, so I was planning on reviewing the content in the lower levels before tackling the level 5 exam.

I've found a few different publications on the ABRSM website that correspond to the theory exam, but am not sure which ones I should buy. Do you have any experience with this?

For example, there is the two-part The AB Guide to Music Theory, the Music Practice in Theory booklets for each grade, then the actual exams from previous years. Which are the essential resources?

Thank you!

All three of the resources you listed would be considered “essentials”. The AB Guide tells you what you need to know (if you’re taking Grade 5 Theory, you’ll find the 1st book to be more useful than the 2nd), the Music Theory in Practice allows you to practice what you’ve learned, and the previous years’ exams help get you acquainted with the test format. I used all three of these and passed my Grade 5 theory exam with distinction (96/100).

Okay, thanks! Would getting the Music Theory in Practice in level 5 and the previous exams in level 5 be a good start to see what I know, or should I just start from the lower levels and buy the level 5 materials once I know the easier content first? Basically, I guess I’m asking to reach high and work my way up, or to start low and work my way up that way. Thanks so much for your help! And congrats on the 96. :)
