Norris212, where’s your proof of that? That’s a really serious thing to say, without doing intensive surveys and studies of the entire student population.

www.students review.com and by talking to friends.

If that’s true AT ALL it’s because UCSD is ridiculously difficult, there are a lot of pre-meds who don’t have time for a life, etc. But in my opinion, if you live in La Jolla and aren’t happy there’s something seriously wrong with you. This is the most beautiful place in the nation IMHO.

hahah man that students review site is full of whiners. You know, I actually want all the “wah ucsd sucks” kids to leave. They’re by far the most annoying people on campus.

You know there’s a UCSD Yelp page?
[University of California, San Diego / UCSD - La Jolla, CA](http://www.yelp.com/biz/university-of-california-san-diego-ucsd-la-jolla)

Keep in mind that the sample sizes of both sites are puny. There are like 100 reviews for UCSD on students review and 75 on yelp. Consider the fact that at any year, there are more than 20,000 students at the school. What is that… like half a percent? Not to mention the fact that alumni makes that an even bigger number.

Why are there not as many whiners at other schools?

^Please, enlighten me. Why are you so set on painting UCSD in a bad light on this board? You don’t even go here.

norris kinda got owned by SDTriton with his stats XD LOL

i’m not trying to upset anyone here but it seems that people think UCSD as a school made up of students that didn’t get into LA or Berkeley.

Yeah, that’s often the stereotype. I have met SO many people here, however, who did get into Berkeley, Caltech, USC, Stanford, UCLA, even Harvard… it’s just a rumor. A lot of people really do want to be here.

Well, I’m pretty excited to attend UCSD this fall…people need to stop getting psyched about the supposedly anti-social atmosphere of the school. Oh and the Sudents Review website is complete BLL****! Well at least I didn’t trust it one bit when I went on that site.

I asked for a study or survey, and you gave me, to quote, “www.students review.com and by talking to friends.”
xD That’s like doing a survey to find out what percentage of Americans enjoy coffee while sitting outside a Starbucks.
ucsandiego915 is right, I’ve known people who turned down both Berkeley and LA to go to SD, especially for engineering. I myself turned down several honors programs from other schools to send in my SIR to SD.

So because I don’t have a survey of the whole school that means that UCSD can’t possibly be less social than other schools? Come on guys. I’m sure most people there are friendly and enjoy going there, but clearly there’s something about UCSD that makes it less social than other campuses. Obviously 100 people is not even close to the whole school, but it’s enough to notice a trend. And yes, a high proportion of people that post reviews are going to be unhappy, but you can still get a good comparison with other schools. Maybe it is just because the people who complain sit in their dorm all day, I don’t know. All I’m saying is that it seems like the person who made this thread has a legitimate concern.

Its because the people who did not go on that site and complain are out having a life.

-____- norris, you just HAVE to be so persistent trying to make sense of your claims, huh? Figuresk8ting is right, an unofficial forum consisting of about 100 ANONYMOUS “students” on that website of yours is NOT enough to notice a trend of the UCSD population.

Dude.

Ever hear of “statistical sampling”? AKA What the Gallup Polls use? AKA What political pundits go by?

Basically people who really hate this school have an incentive to post negative reviews, while people who really like this school have an equal incentive to post positive reviews. So in the end, it balances out to generate a relevant trend (of course there’s like some margin of error, but you get a general gist). So yeah, I’m gonna have to stand with norris on this. With relatively equal incentives, why is it that we have a larger proportion of students on ************** posting negative reviews. To put it simply, this school generates a certain degree of dissatisfaction.

Is the hate all about social life?

Thank you mapthesoul! Finally a person who understands statistics.

I like UCSD. There’s my contribution to the statistics.

Congrats to this thread, cuz it convinced me to make an account just so I could respond!

I’m a freshman at UCSD, and this school was not my first choice. (I actually hated it when I visited) I was all for UCLA, like everyone else and thought all I would do here was study and die of boredom.

I was SO wrong.

Honestly, SD has one of the best downtowns I have ever seen…it can be three in the morning and Gaslamp is SO alive. The clubs and the restaurants and just the entire scene is fun and pretty much ideal for every college student’s Saturday night out.

Oh, but UCSD is in La Jolla which is “sooo far from everything”…there is a thing called a car that might fix that problem. It takes 15 minutes tops to get to downtown. Not bringing your car down next year? No problem! Cuz UCSD has tons of students who commute (So make friends with people older than you and with people who live nearby) There are two girls in my suite with cars, half of my teammates on my dance team have cars, and then some. And I knew no one before coming here.

There are always parties going on, and I am not in a Greek org (If you’re really worried about not having fun, then just join a sorority or frat and you’re guaranteed parties nonstop.), am a computer engineering major and I don’t have a car. Those three put together to me scream “UCSD student who does not having a social life”, and maybe I am the minority of people here who actually know how to have fun. But UCSD
is a great school academically so if I can get that prestige and education as well as have a great social life, then whats wrong with being the minority. Its not like I would party with all 20,000 undergrads anyways.

But I said all this just assuming that your idea of fun is looking hot and going out and getting drunk/high/partying etc etc.

If you’re outdoorsy, then trust me. you’ll love it. The beach is right here. I’m definitely not an outdoors person, but my roommate bikes to all these random crazy places, and has gone jetskiing, paragliding (cuz we have a glider port 2 seconds away) kayaking, surfing, and some other stuff which i cant remember at the moment, all in the first 4 months of school. She doesn’t have a car either.

And if you just love relaxing or not crazy fun, then theres that too. Its all about finding your group of people who want to have fun in the same way you do. Like I said, UCSD has 20,000 undergrads so the chances of you not finding other people like yourself is ridiculously low.

Just remember that if you do choose UCSD, you aren’t the only one who is aware of the fact that it is known to be a socially dead school. There are going to many MANY more students trying to have fun and thats what you’re looking for, then you’ll find it very easily. The people who complain about it being socially dead are the ones who are probably not trying hard enough to get a social life. And you know what, even I can say that UCSD as a whole is not social, but to put everyone who comes here in that category is just stupid.

If you’re still unconvinced, then talk to other UCSD students who are SIMILAR to you in terms of social life and having fun. I love going out partying/clubbing and all that jazz, so if I were to ask someone who loved, lets say…video games and robots and computer parts and stuff (not that thats bad…just not my cup of tea) about the social life knowing that he/she was nothing like me, then of course, I would get a wrong representation of it.

Hope this helped. College truly is what you make of it.

Dude… find some friends that actually have lives. Have a life yourself, and you won’t even have to worry about the crowd that hates all the time… By the time some of you 1st years are well into your 2nd year, you’re gonna look at topics like these and the people with negative reviews and know that no one gives a f***.

You guys shouldn’t have to bother backing up the school against ppl like mapthesoul and norris either. It’s not worth convincing ppl like the OP if they honestly are gonna listen to screennames of people who are probably negative kids that watch dramas/shows on their laptops instead of doing something more useful. <– dont do that and you’ll have fun at UCSD. From MaptheSoul’s Korean on the first page… I can already assume alot about his/her life.
