helloel: and for the personal recs, just ask your teachers to photocopy each rec for how many schools you’re applying to and ask them to mail them. That’s what I did.

LiveForMusic: for me, I thought the vocabulary was the hardest part. It’s the one part of the test where the only way you can prepare for it is to use flashcards or read very advanced books. I prepared for 2 hours a day for 2 weeks, and still scored like in the 60-70 range. The key to the ssat is to not rush. The math is easy if you take your time, and so is the reading comprehension. For the written essay, the main thing is to get strong main body paragraphs, and have the intro and conclusion sum everything up (that’s the rule of thumb for most timed essays).

helloel: the personal recommendation is simply a recommendation as to how you will fit/do in the school you’re applying to. the recommendation can even be an email, as what one of my personal recommendations were. to answer your question, no, schools will not mind at all.

Approximately how many people leave Andover each year for reasons such as homesickness, finding it too hard, getting tired of boarding, disciplinary actions etc.? Are these vacant spots filled again next year?

JohnSmithIII: 1) if your username is your real name, I suggest changing it if you’re applying to BS (AOs can see what you post on this site). Secondly, some people do leave (i know of 3 people who have already left NOT due to discipline, but for health or home-sickness). It is very sad to see people leave, and it is never a happy place when it does. the fact is though that these things happen everywhere, and we have to accept that. And I don’t know if these spots are filled again next year.

LiveForMusic: Not a problem! PM me if you have any Qs in general!

@swimdude006: im a sophomore applying to andover, exeter, and lawrenceville, and deerfield. can i ask for your honest judgement (dont hesitate to say if something isnt up to the standard my gpa= 4.19 based on 4.0 scale. i have gotten all A’s no A-'s since 4th grade. i am involved in A TON of EC–too many too list. i also have many leadership roles ex: Vice President, MC, teacher, etc. I currently take 2 APs and honors everything else. The only part im worried about is my ssat (2214) which i screwed up completely. but im taking it again in dec so i should do better. what do you think about my chances of getting in? And also, what do they ask you during the interview?

Binghulu262: Honestly, you look like a solid candidate, as does everyone on this website does. Everyone who goes to PA, let alone private school, has some amazing stats. I’ve honestly never seen the “ideal candidate” who is amazing in sports, straight A’s in the classroom, and is a modest human being. The AOs told me that those traits are hard to find in a candidate, and I agree. Based off of what you’ve told me, you assimilate easily into the PA setting. Don’t believe these “chance” responses. I tried those for a bit as a newbie on this site, and it didn’t help that much. All it did was bring me down, or boost my confidence a bit. Honestly, you don’t need ME to tell you that you need to bring your ssat score up, or to say, “WOW this kid has some amazing stats.” All you have to do is be your best, and show it through your applications and through your interview. That’s the advice that I’ll give to you, and it will probably be some of the only true advice you get from this site. Be yourself and do your best: it’s a common lifestyle that we should all live up to.

Sorry couldn’t help you much, but that’s my input!

Rizzledrizzle:usually, many students attend the drama labs on friday nights, which are student run. They are very fun to watch and we all go there to cheer our friends on as well. I don’t really know about the formal plays or musicals because none have been shown yet. Probably, many will see the musical becasue there is only one every two years.

In cold winter days with snow and stuff, is it hard to get from class to class as the Andover campus is huge and spread-out? How much time do you have between classes? Do you need to cross Main St to go to classes on the other side of the campus?

Can the Personal Recommendation Letter come from a teacher in school, if I think that the specific teacher can write the most favorable recommendation for me?

JohnSmithIII: When there’s snow, it’s still expected that you get to class on time, yet teachers are very understanding if you’re late because of the circumstances. You have 10 minutes between classes, which is usually more than enough. The only time you need to cross the street is if you have music class, or if you want to go back to your dorm (West quad south, west quad north, or abbot).

navajocn: I’m not quite understanding your question. The personal recommendation can come from anybody that isn’t your relative. Basically, it’s supposed to show an extracurricular that you have a PASSION (notice how i capitalized the word :D) for. You can have multiple personal recommendations (these don’t neccissarilly have to on the personal recommendation form, but can simply be a hand written letter by the person explaining your strengths and why you should attend X school). The teacher recommendations are very specific, so I wouldn’t mess with those.

Hi! I’m applying to Phillips Andover as an incoming sophomore, but I was just wondering, for the personal recs, I know I can get a lot – mainly because most of my teachers/extracurricular coaches/supervisors/etc. really like me…I’m a big people person and I love talking to adults. I can probably get at least 8, since I have a lot of EC’s, but I was wondering, would that be too much? Would Andover be annoyed at me? :/

Also, I’m not sure whether or not I have a “hook”. In my perspective, I’m pretty well rounded, but I love foreign languages (why I fell in love with Andover) and I learn extremely quickly and study by myself at home (Russian, Spanish, & Chinese), but I don’t have any awards or anything that could really make my “hook” stronger…if that makes any sense at all. Any advice? :/
