Haven't taken Calc 2 in 5 years..take Calc 3 or start over @ Calc 1?

Hi all,

I'm going back to school to get a BS/MS in Civil Engineering-Geotechnical emphasis. I have a degree in Geology and only had to take Math through Calculus 2. It's been 5 years since I have taken Calc 2 and, as you all know, I need through Diffy Q for Geotech. So, my question is do I start Calculus all over again at Calc 1 or do I start at Calc 3? It's been so long, I'm thinking I should just start all over again at Calc 1 rather than struggle with Calc 3. Also, I need to take Phys. 2 (Calc emphasis) and, the same thing, I haven't taken Phys 1 (Calc based) in 5 years. I'm thinking I should just start fresh, but I wanted to see what you all thought.

Thanks! I really appreciate it!

Also, does anyone have any Geotechnical/Geological Engineering graduate experience at Colorado School of Mines and Colorado State University? If so, let me know what you thought.

ya know, just about everything I learned in calc 2 was made pointless by calc 3 and physics.

Just brush up on derivatives, and integral (especially integral by part). They aren’t hard but Calc 3 involves with partial derivatives and double/triple integrals. Good luck!

You’ll probably do well without starting over if you spend some time reviewing old material. If you know where you will attend school, is it possible to look a syllabus from future coursework? That will give you a good idea of what awaits you.

Yes, sit down and do some problems from old texts, look at online tutorials. My husband had a 4 year gap and did OK, though he said it was hard at first, but I’m sure he didn’t refresh. Good luck!
