Haverford English program????

Hey, everyone! I’m a high school senior, and just last weekend I made the choice to attend Haverford College. It was really difficult because at that point it was between UMich and Haverford…but eventually I chose Haverford for the smaller size and the friendly vibe. I’m a humanities person (probably going to major in English) and not really into math or science at all (although I do like bio), but I was just wondering if you could tell me a little more about Haverford’s English, history, creative writing, and classics programs. I’m a little nervous about my decision because I’ve heard great things about UMich’s undergrad English program, while most of the academic discussion about Haverford seems to focus on its strength in the sciences…

Haverford will excel in all traditional disciplines, including the humanities. You cannot go wrong with Haverford.

@atlanticgirl you might want to post this on the Haverford forum. I hope you get some good answers - my son is heading to Haverford this Fall and he is humanities focused as well…

You made the right choice. English classes at Haverford will be much smaller, discussion based courses with lots of personal attention from the faculty. Large universities like UMich have some stellar faculty, but the class sizes are larger and there is more focus on graduate students.

Thanks to everyone who responded!

Don’t forget to look at all the classes available at Bryn Mawr as well. All of them, along with choosing to major on either campus, is open to you, a feature actively utilized by students at both colleges. UPenn and Swarthmore classes as well, although the commute isn’t as super easy. This provides you with many options while still benefitting from the small classes and close-knit community that Haverford offers.
