Hello everyone! =) I'm going into my senior year of high school. I got a job in May and have maintained it this whole summer. But I am going to give my notice right before Band Camp...

I just feel like during the school year, with my 3 honors classes, my multiple bands schedule, and practicing for my college music school audition that I wouldn't be able to also maintain my job without losing my sanity. =P I believe that it would allow me to put my time into the things that will help me a ton for the audition.

Do you think that what I want to do is alright? Sorry if it seems like a semi-dumb thing to ask, haha. =)

Do you absolutely need the cash that the job brings in? (You don’t have to tell anyone the answers to these questions, just consider them yourself.) Does the job bring you into contact with someone of some stature in the music world who might exert some influence on your behalf (e.g. pointing you out to a colleague who teaches at one of the schools to which you intend to apply, writing an excellent letter of recommendation or providing feedback on your playing?)

If you can’t answer yes to at least one of those questions, then working on your audition and keeping up your grades are likely to be a lot more important in terms of admission to an auditioned music program.

Can you ask your employer to scale back your hours? This may help you keep your job so that you have a path for add’l cash once auditions are over and you’re just waiting for answers. Employers have to juggle high school kids schedules all the time and if it’s possible, this may leave you with more options for the rest of your senior year and post-senior summer.

Thank you both for the advice! I truly appreciate it. =)

BassDad: I don’t really need the money per se, mostly because I’m a saver (I save all my birthday and holiday money, ever since I was young haha). =) Sadly the job doesn’t have any “connections” to the music world. So thank you for the advice. =)

Snowflake: I only work on the weekends, usually only one day. Saturdays during the school year are filled with practices and competitions for marching band. Then I need to have family dinner, extended practicing for auditions, and homework time on Sundays. =) Working during the week isn’t an option, because the store’s hours are in direct conflict with school, haha! Now that I typed that all out, I figured out I cannot continue the job. Thank you for helping me realize that. =)

Good plan. This year is going to have a very, very big effect on the rest of your life, and depends extraordinarily heavily on how wisely you spend your time this year. Get in the practice room and stay there.
