Having a Language as one of my Majors?

I am in my second year of university and have to declare my major/minor, major/major by Christmas. As of right now I am set up in an Anthropology major which I enjoy immensely and am hoping to use for med school granted that I keep my grades up (I still am not entirely sure of what I want to do for grad school, at the moment sports surgery is what has caught my eye,) but I'm also in Russian studies right now which I also enjoy greatly, in fact it's probably my favourite class.
In regards to that I have a couple of questions, will majoring in a language lead to a certain degree of fluency or proficiency (~12 courses of study?) Is majoring in a language a smart choice with payoff?

I also interact on a regular level with Eastern Europeans because of the sport I participate in for many hours a week, and I think Russian will be an important language to know with the economic shift towards the East,

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Being proficient in a language, especially one as prominent as Russian is always going to be a good call. As for fluency, just make sure you put the time in. Doing hardly anything won’t get you far in terms of pronunciation and accent. It comes with practice.

Thank you for your answer, it’s always reassuring to know that it will be beneficial  and rest assured I’ll be putting the time in, both here and abroad!
