Hello, I am an incoming college freshman. I had been awarded $1000 (500 each semester) in Work Study funds, but I applied for another job on campus as a barista to help. I was wondering if this was even allowed and if other people have had similar experiences, even if you’re not a first year. Also, do having two jobs on campus affect my financial aid?
Many campuses have a limit on how many hours you can work for the university. That’s why many of us (myself included) work a work study job as well as an off-campus job.
Is the coffee job a university job? It may not be, you may be paid by a contractor. Just ask at FA and they’ll tell you want is allowed to be combined with WS. You have a low WS amount, and I think most students really want to work more than that.
Your work study income should not affect FA. You list the amount on the FAFSA in question 44c under “need based employment”.
If you are a dependent student you could make $6,300 income in 2015 and it didn’t affect EFC.
What you earn this year (2016) won’t come into play until you file FAFSA for school year 2018/19 anyway.
For 2016/17 FAFSA and 2017/18 FAFSA the income from 2015 is used.
^ Just to clarify even further: you can earn 6,300+ any work study earnings before it’ll affect your EFC (assuming no auto 0 EFC or anything like that).
So for example if you earn 1000 from your WS job and 6200 from a non-WS job, you’re still under that 6,300 limit before it’ll start being added to your EFC.
